US President George W. Bush and his wife Laura launched the annual White House Easter egg party today while managing to avoid any awkward moments with dozens of gay couples and their children who attended the outdoor event.
The Easter Egg Roll is a traditional all-American event held on the White House lawn each year since 1878, where kids push an egg with a giant wooden spoon, often with the proud president and his wife looking on.
But gay groups joined the queue for tickets - which were given out to families on a first-come, first served basis at the White House on Sunday.
Despite the opposition of conservative religious groups, Mr Bush and his wife Laura chose not to prevent the gay parents from attending.
The gay groups said their gesture was meant to make their presence felt in American society even though Mr Bush opposes legalising gay marriage.
There were no confrontations or tense moments as the opening of the event was closed to the public, with the president and his wife meeting invited guests, including families of White House staff and volunteers.
The gay parents also chose a discreet approach without any explicit protest, identifying themselves with rainbow-coloured flowers.
"Like other parents in this country, we want to give our children the best opportunities, to shower them with love, to teach them respect and a love for the rich and diverse traditions America has to offer them," said Jennifer Chrisler, executive director for the Family Pride Coalition.
Family Pride has been behind the calls for gay groups to crash the White House party which conservatives have condemned as an attempt to politicise a family event.
In damp, chilly weather, First Lady Laura Bush issued an official welcome before the Easter eggs were rolled across soggy grass outside the White House.
"In Washington, we know that spring has arrived when the White House lawn is filled with children for the Easter Egg Hunt," she said. "I want to thank all of the children here today who brought their parents with them."
The First Lady avoided commenting on the gay couples and before the event her office noted the rules: children of all ages are welcome but there must be at least one aged under seven in each group and no more than two adults in each group.
Uh oh. I bet Dad and Dad probably had some new ideas where to push the egg and spoon when they got home.
They weren't really crashing if they were invited, were they?
Nice misleading use of the headline MSM.
Pushing their agenda by orchestrating a politically motivated hijacking of a national CHILDRENS celebration of a traditional holiday will not win them any supporters, in fact quite the opposite.
What next?
I'm sure the President would have much preferred they stayed at home...
If these gays REALLY loved their children, they would give them a NORMAL life with a mom and dad!!! How AWFUL for a child to be raised by two lesbians or two gay guys!! Seeing your mom kissing another woman or your dad kissing another man would be AWFUL!!!!!!!
They weren't invited...

My guess is that the "invited" guests were in a better location roped off from the public at large. But neither were they crashing, apparently.
The very fact that they were mentioned highlights gays are not mainstream, as they would like us to think.
An interesting point.
Next year NAMBLA will get tickets, no doubt. Just imagine, they can get half again as many famlies when there is only one "parent" and one child.
What she did not say:
"Yes, we will be so proud of our son Timmy after he grows up and is repeatedly sodomised or performs oral sex on men he does not know. If he chooses to do this at bars, bathhouses or public restrooms, well that will be his choice and we will not condemn him for it. After all diversity is his right."
What a joke.
Gays are disgusting.
So we're left to figure out just what this minority seeks from the rest of society. If their goal is to push their warped lifestyle into everyone else's face, we can understand why they would show up at a White House Easter celebration.
But if they're looking for approval from heterosexuals by participating in any family event, they make a big mistake and they will get quite the opposite effect.
I'm just surprised that lesbian couples would be interested in an egg hunt. After all, they would already have roughly twice as many eggs as a normal couples.
These special interests will use anybody and anything to get their faces in the front of any event. I would have NEVER used my child to push a political point. Shameless!!
I don't think the President cares, even though the RNC may tell you differently. He has an aide in the WH whose main job it is is to handle AIDS, and the guy is gay.
so nobody was invited, then.
Do you know any?
