Mikhail Kalashnikov, designer of the world's most popular assault rifle, says that U.S. soldiers in Iraq are using his invention in preference to their own weapons, proving that his gun is still the best.
"Even after lying in a swamp you can pick up this rifle, aim it and shoot. That's the best job description there is for a gun. Real soldiers know that and understand it," the 86-year-old gunmaker told a weekend news conference in Moscow.
"In Vietnam, American soldiers threw away their M-16 rifles and used [Kalashnikov] AK-47s from dead Vietnamese soldiers, with bullets they captured. That was because the climate is different to America, where M-16s may work properly," he said.
"Look what's happening now: every day on television we see that the Americans in Iraq have my machine guns and assault rifles in their armored vehicles. Even there American rifles don't work properly."
Some U.S. troops in Iraq have reportedly taken to using AK-47s in preference to the standard-issue M-16. The Cold War-era gun, renowned for its durability and easy handling, is plentiful in Iraq.

For distance, (300M+) you cant beat the M14.
For close in work, I would have to agree that the AK47 is the way to go.
Now if he'd only used a REAL rifle cartridge instead of that POS 7.62X39 pistol round.
Hate to break it to you but I preferred it to the M-16 (USMC here), my father and uncle preferred it (Army, Vietnam) and a lot of their buddies as well.
Feel free to check for yourself if you don't believe me.

I just got one of the new SOCOM II models. A REAL sweet gun to shoot.
NO!
" just got one of the new SOCOM II models. A REAL sweet gun to shoot."
I sold two of my Poodle Shooters (AR15) last year and bought an SA M1a match rifle. Work good! Last long time!
Americans using anything in an Islamic Republic full of terrorists should not need deniability. Just what ever kills them best in any way that is effective.
Ouch! Thanks. Maybe it's time we came up with something better than either the M16 or AK47.
Well so long as you don't have to hit anything at any sort of distance and only need stopping power, sure the AK's work great.
But accuracy is another matter.
I think what our troops would really prefer is .308
I kind of want to get one of those for a boat gun, and general self defense weapon. I believe it could even do a fair job on whitetails in the woodsy farm country I usually hunt, especially since I rarely have a shot over 100 yards, usually much less. Though I'll probably stick with my Remington 700 for that.
Not sure whether to go for the SOCOM 16 or the II.
And don't forget a nasty very LOUD and distinct "CLICK!!" when removing the safety!! Makes it tough for the close-in ambush...
"This is the AK-47 assault rifle, the preferred weapon of our enevy. It makes a distinctive sound when fired."

maybe his vodka, but not his weapon.
Do you have any experience with the Wolf steel case rounds? Anyone feel free to chime in. It would be great to save some bucks with the price of brass what it is.
Try that with an AK. You'd be lucky to keep all on the same target.
CETME. FAL. M14. All are far superior weapons to the AK or the AR. But, few want to lug around the heavier ammo, whine constantly about the recoil, ect...
You sit down on the ground going doorway to doorway. Poke your head out and I'll make a sausage patty out of it.
But then again, methinks that you and I may be considered a little "obsolecent" these days.
I like the G3 too, but I note with some amusement the fact that while you are advocating ditching the AR in favor of a roller-locked action, H&K has abandoned that design in favor of the G36 - which is a fancy copy of Eugene Stoner's successor to the AR-15 (the AR-180/AR-18).

I bought a case of .45 and haven't had any problems with them. I've heard some people comment that their rifle ammo doesn't work well with some rifles but don't remember which ones. Of course I've heard people say that the surplus Indian 7.62 isn't very good but I haven't had any trouble with that either. The only drawback with it is that it comes in those little plastic packets instead of stripper clips which I prefer.
