The 87-year-old fugitive knew it was over when the detective leaned out of his car window and yelled "Maria."
With that, Maria Josefa Otero, who was found guilty but never sentenced for killing a 13-year-old boy, was finally caught in front of her Miami apartment after giving authorities the slip three decades ago.
"How did you find me?" she said to police. "Nobody knows about me."
But Otero's case was not forgotten. Found guilty of second-degree murder in 1976, she fled to Guatemala, several other countries and Puerto Rico. She came back about 15 years ago, living most of those years under her maiden name in Miami-Dade County, police said.

Justice denied.
Those slippery balconies once again.
how come a story from the orlando sentinel is labeled as being from the (for lauderdale) sun-sentinel? thety're entirely different papers, owned by entirely different people, in entirely different places.
Political ideology aside, IIRC, the Boston Globe has printed stories from the Washington Post (different ownership) and the NY Times (gulp, same owners).
Otero was found guilty of second-degree murder in 1976 for the shooting death of Johnny Perez. A judge released her on $50,000 bond to get her personal affairs in order before sentencing.
In 1975, the boy and four friends jumped into the pool of an upscale waterfront apartment building owned by Otero. Otero reportedly stood on the balcony of her apartment building and ordered the youths to leave. Perez was shot in the head as he ran away.
Otero's attorneys said during the trial that her .38-caliber revolver had accidentally discharged when she slipped and fell on the balcony.
"She wanted to scare them away. It was a freak shot," defense attorney Donald Bierman told The Miami Herald on Thursday.
Jail time for granny bump.
Good possibility that Bush made her do it.
There are no statutes of limitations on murder bump!
What would (JC) Jimmy Carter do?
Beat up a bunny rabbit?
Or maybe hug a terrorist...
You could stop almost any woman in Miami and say "Maria!" and she'd respond.
What does that have to do with you stating the wrong paper as the publishing source?? Did you just make it up?
I guess she figured she would blend in with all the other criminals in Miami. For 15 years she was right.
How is it the wrong source? It is from the South Florida Sun Sentinel as stated on the link from the Orlando Sentinel newspaper. Isn't that what I used as the source?
