2008 presidential hopeful George Allen urged his Senate colleagues on Sunday to "put the pedal to the metal" on immigration reform and "first and foremost, secure the borders."
"[For] the people out there in the real world . . . this is a hot issue," Sen. Allen told CBS's "Face the Nation." "I think the Senate needs to put the pedal to the metal, get moving, make decisions and first and foremost, secure the borders."
On some of the amnesty bills currently before Congress, Allen said: "We should not reward illegal behavior because all you'll get is more illegal behavior."
Asked if Republican-controlled Congress would "be hurt" by further inaction on illegal immigration, Allen said: "I think Republicans need to stand up for the rule of law. I think Republicans need to stand up for securing our borders. And I think Republicans - and all people - ought to look at history."
The Virginia GOP'er noted that in 1986, amnesty was provided to the 3 million illegals then in the country.
"Now we have approximately 11 million in the country illegally," he added. "Twenty years from now we're going to have 20 million.
"We need to do this right, do it properly and learn from history."
Reminds me of Margaret Thatcher's story of the French politician who said:
J.D. Hayworth was also not very hawkish on the border at first, and then he changed his tune once he got a close-up look at the situation.
There once was a 'virtual' fence
They built it for only five cents
A political scam
This invisible dam
If you believe in it you're really dense
JD is leading on this issue.
George Allen is following public opinion.
We need a real principled leader in the White House in '09.
Good one!
Yep.
But, in Dutch's defense, he had a Dem Congress that wasn't afraid to lie.
The current leadership not only has a GOP Congress, they have public opinion on the side of enforcement.
But they won't act, because notwithstanding their rhetoric, they're on the wrong side.
George Allen's political gurus are Bush political people. Everyone better get their brain around that.
And Ed Gillespie, who runs Allen's money operation, is the leader of the OBL.
Okay I am getting to like Senator Allen more and more.

He says an actual fence, while doable, isn't "worthy of consideration."
Yet he considers a guest worker program a necessity. Go figure.
As Tancredo says....follow the money. First Data Corp's International Western Union is the source for half of First Data Corps's revenue thanks to money transfers by illegals. First Data Corp is heavily involved in helping the illegals:

According to Charlie Fote, chief executive of First Data, the company has stepped into the forum of shaping public policy because the voices of a large portion of their client base (immigrants) were not being heard. Other steps the company has taken are:
Forming a political action committee that is funding pro-immigration candidates.
First Data Empowerment Fund - $10 million available to help immigrant communities as well as to promote "enlightened" immigration discussions.
Fote personally hosting a series of immigration reform meetings across the country.
Assisting Latino entrepreneurs and teaching families abroad how to leverage funds received from family members in the U.S.
Guess which one of two Republican Senators has received political contributions from First Data Corp...George Allen.

You are forgetting that Goldwater, whom I supported tirelessly as a college student in 1964, was far less conservative in his later years (when Peggy died and he came under the influence of his second wife).
For all posters:
Please add these words to the end of any immigrant claim that you hear; ..."at the prevailing wage rate."
To any claim from business that they cannot find enough workers you might add this; "...at the prevailing wage rate."
Besides a fence and border security, our government's most absolute power is that of taxation.
This whole issue could end if the federal government were willing to impose a tax on remittances leaving this country headed for Mexico.
Understand that no one really knows at what time and place illegal immigration will end for this country. Some economists are saying that as soon as Mexican wages are at 35% of US wages the flow will slow down markedly.
We can accelrate that slow down with the imposition of a tax and the enforcement of the present immigration code.
All of the laws we need are already on the books. We need only enforce them.
You are absolutely correct.
May I add one thing to your list: Tax all remittances to Mexico.
BTW, some economists are saying that when Mexican wages approach 35% of US wages the flow will slow down.
We can accelerate that happening by the imposition of the tax and by removing incentives.
Great post.
Another interesting money trail is the one left by George Allen when he headed up the National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee.
While we all tend to blame George W. Bush and Rick Santorum for Specter retaining his seat against Pat Toomey, the fact is, it was George Allen who controlled the money.
The first person in line for blame as to why Arlen Specter isn't gone should be Senator George Allen!
Frisk, will give George Allen the death nail ASAP.
I have argued for a long time Allen would be a great choice.
As for having more grit, that will come later if his name is thrown into the contenders list. He already has a lot of issues on his side, anti- abortion, inti-homosexual, controlled spending on the federal level and so on.
This should be the head line of every news paper in America, but we know that isn't going to happen.
I agree with the statement and, the majority in America will agree also, it's just we can't get through to the Congress Of The United States how the illegal situation can be turned around, if it isn't too late.
I'm well aware.
RobbyS raised Goldwater's name in the context of George Allen, as though it excused Allen's poor speaking ability and presence.
Yet Goldwater's presidential run had a lasting effect on the conservative cause. The ideas he espoused were key to influencing folks like Reagan.
Allen's political endeavors will lay on the ash heap next to Bob Dole's. It's a waste of time to consider Allen for the nomination.
Three cheers for George Allen, make that four cheers.
Uhmmm...his abortion position is very weak. He thinks first-trimester babes in the womb are disposable.
...inti-homosexual...
His office is known as one of the most 'gay-friendly' in Washington.
...controlled spending on the federal level...
Prove it.
..the Senator is starting to make Presidential sounds...
George Allen has been called "moderately pro-choice" for his support of abortions in the earliest stages.
Allen believes the right to life does not begin until after detectable brainwaves and a heartbeat. Although he has voted carefully as a Senator, he does not qualify as pro-life.
