2008 presidential hopeful George Allen urged his Senate colleagues on Sunday to "put the pedal to the metal" on immigration reform and "first and foremost, secure the borders."
"[For] the people out there in the real world . . . this is a hot issue," Sen. Allen told CBS's "Face the Nation." "I think the Senate needs to put the pedal to the metal, get moving, make decisions and first and foremost, secure the borders."
On some of the amnesty bills currently before Congress, Allen said: "We should not reward illegal behavior because all you'll get is more illegal behavior."
Asked if Republican-controlled Congress would "be hurt" by further inaction on illegal immigration, Allen said: "I think Republicans need to stand up for the rule of law. I think Republicans need to stand up for securing our borders. And I think Republicans - and all people - ought to look at history."
The Virginia GOP'er noted that in 1986, amnesty was provided to the 3 million illegals then in the country.
"Now we have approximately 11 million in the country illegally," he added. "Twenty years from now we're going to have 20 million.
"We need to do this right, do it properly and learn from history."
Glad to see the Senator SAYING some of the right things.
Of course, the current occupant of the Oval Ofice is SAYING some of the right things....
OMG, that might be the most devastatingly accurate post I've ever seen on FR...
I've seen George Allen speak. He's terrible.
To compare him in any way to Reagan is laughable. Try Bob Dole.
Was Goldwater a great speaker? No better than the average Rotarian.
Was Goldwater a great speaker? No better than the average Rotarian.
Cut of the same cloth, they are.
Neither Bush nor Allen intends to back up any pro-border security rhetoric with real action.
Ask Allen what he thinks of a fence.
LOL...
Ronald Reagan was THE leader of the conservative movement. He ran the movement from the Oval Office.
The lack of which is why the current officeholder is no Reagan....
The next Republican nominee needs to be the true leader of the conservative movement, as he should be.
The thought that some would think George Allen deserves that title makes me laugh, too.
Are you saying George Allen is in league with Goldwater?
Please.
"...Allen said: "We should not reward illegal behavior because all you'll get is more illegal behavior.""
Unhunh...I like what he says but TALK IS CHEAP.....
Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I feel like a complete clown after voting for "conservatives" since 1994.
Yes. He does. I've met him and he had a chew after his speech.
I hear tell he believes in 'virtual' fences.
Typical Washington pap. The emperor has virtual clothes...
Exactly as I stated in shorthand in post # 18 ;)
I think that politicians, as others, can change as they learn more about a topic. Allen obviously is willing to listen to opinions other than his own. He is still for a multifaceted solution, but strongly in favor of border security first. It sounds like a winner to me.
It's quite simple. All I ask is for a president to:
Never hold out hope that a politician is sincere when he changes his tune to what you want to hear.
His tendency to flip-flop will do no more for Allen than it did for John Kerry.
While he's awful late to the game, we'll take his support.
But I'm always suspicious of politicians who are 'late to the game' and then somehow think they should lead the parade.
Maybe after a decade of George Allen leading on the border issues and on abortion and on the gay agenda...truly leading and not feeding us squishy pap...THEN perhaps I'll start to believe that his nice rhetoric is anything but empty rhetoric.
ROFL..!
Ronnie's record on illegal immigration was none too spectacular. In the post-9/11 era, benign neglect is not OK.
