2008 presidential hopeful George Allen urged his Senate colleagues on Sunday to "put the pedal to the metal" on immigration reform and "first and foremost, secure the borders."
"[For] the people out there in the real world . . . this is a hot issue," Sen. Allen told CBS's "Face the Nation." "I think the Senate needs to put the pedal to the metal, get moving, make decisions and first and foremost, secure the borders."
On some of the amnesty bills currently before Congress, Allen said: "We should not reward illegal behavior because all you'll get is more illegal behavior."
Asked if Republican-controlled Congress would "be hurt" by further inaction on illegal immigration, Allen said: "I think Republicans need to stand up for the rule of law. I think Republicans need to stand up for securing our borders. And I think Republicans - and all people - ought to look at history."
The Virginia GOP'er noted that in 1986, amnesty was provided to the 3 million illegals then in the country.
"Now we have approximately 11 million in the country illegally," he added. "Twenty years from now we're going to have 20 million.
"We need to do this right, do it properly and learn from history."

Well, if I were in your shoes, you need to find someone, who has some capacity to change the market a bit. Otherwise, going down your road, is the road to a rather swifter tilt to the left than is currently in train. On some issues, the tilt is almost like plate tectonics, that cannot be stopped, like largely socialized medical care.
Well, it was a bit more articulate and accurate than what Allen actually said, wasn't it? :)
My issues are doing fine.

Particular candidates are secondary to the principles and to how firmly the nation embraces those principles.

Uh, no. I was not promoting them. I said I would vote for them if they were nominated. I'll vote for Allen if he is nominated. I'd vote for Keyes if he was nominated.
But, I don't think the latter two could beat any Democrat.

Allen likes to use cute rhetoric.
But when you ask him, Allen's version of border security is watching border-crossers with unmanned aircraft equipt with heat sensors. After that, he supports giving them a guest worker program. He is opposed to building a fence.
A lot of good Allen would do. No better than Bush.

Goldwater was, in a way, somewhat like McGovern. Each was the instrument by which a faction gained power in its party. Reagan was the charismatic figure who, in 1980, led the faction to victory. Goldwater's function was to voice the complaints of those who were disappointed with Dewey-Eisenhower-Nixon Republicanism. Had Nixon won in 1962, however, Goldwater would never have got his shot, and of course, if Nixon had not screwed up as President, Reagan would never have got his. Looking back, we have to thank Richard Nixon for his blunders.
