Neighbor arrested for murder; investigators temporarily rule out chatroom abductor

PURCELL -- Just steps from her father's apartment on N. 8th St, investigators said they identified and apprehended Friday afternoon a 26-year-old man they believe is responsible for the kidnapping and subsequent murder of 10-year-old Jamie Rose Bolin.
Bolin was reported missing after she failed to return home Wednesday afternoon from a trip to the library.
A downstairs neighbor, Kevin Ray Underwood, is being held without bond in the McClain County Jail today and will be charged with one count of first degree murder Monday, said District Attorney Tim Kuykendall at a press conference late Friday night.
"In my 24 years as a prosecutor, I have never, ever been involved in a case that was quite as atrocious, heinous and as cruel as to what happened to this little girl," Kuykendall said. "We intend to seek the death penalty on this."
As of press time, officials were securing search warrants for Underwood's car and apartment, both sites which may yield even more charges, Kuykendall said.
Earlier in the investigation, it was believed Bolin was abducted by a possible Internet contact who drove a dark blue Tahoe. Friday night, Kuykendall said "as it turns out, the information is probably going to be unrelated (to Bolin's murder)."
Police apprehended Underwood at his apartment around 4 p.m. Friday after he began acting suspiciously at a police roadblock earlier that day.
The neighbor, said Bolin's aunt Linda Chiles, "pretty much kept to himself" and was relatively unknown to Bolin or her father, Curtis.
As of press time, Kim Carter of the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, said he was unable to determine how long Bolin was kept alive at the apartment before she was killed, nor were officials able to release any details related to the ongoing investigation.
"This is not like TV, it will not be wrapped up in a 60-second present," he said.
Jamie's uncle, Mark Chiles, still reeling from the news that his 10-year-old niece was kidnapped, likely held against her will and killed, said he warned parents everywhere to "hold onto their kids tight."
"This happened less than 10 feet of where (her father lived)," he said. "People need to know who their neighbors are."

I had heard it was pretty bad but reading this from the press conference made me sick -- this lowlife deserves to die a slow, tortured death IMO.
I do want a full and fair trial. And I want anyone who helped him.
I didn't sleep well last night but after reading the press conference transcript, I think it is going to be another long night. I was already behind our DA Tim Kuykendall for reelection but now I will work 24/7 to get him reelected after the way he has handled this so far. I knew it was bad when I saw him last night but I had no idea it was this bad.
Looks like he has confessed -- what wonder what lowlife trial attorney will try to plea bargain down to life? We have plenty of scumbag criminal attorneys around here.

Too bad the cops didn't just shoot the mofo. That is horrible. Her poor family.
When did she get reported as missing? If it was before the time of death the police department needs to be taken to task on this one. It may not have helped but it may have.

Looks like she was dead before the search began according to reports here. Someone told me this afternoon that the Department of Human Services had let this child fall through the cracks and that we should be asking why.

It sounds like from reports here that she was killed before she was reported missing. There will be more questions if what I heard this afternoon about the DHS allowing this girl to fall through their cracks is true.
Her parents were divorced; her mother was a truck driver living in Guthrie and she lived with her Dad -- not sure what the details were but DHS received some complaints and didn't bother to follow up on the family situation is what I was told late this afternoon.
It just seems like we have a lot considering we are not that large or don't usually have that much violent crime -- one thing they have in common is that most are scumbags.
She must not have had much of a chance if DHS was involved. Poor baby.
This is one of the few cases I would be delighted to hear never made it to trial due to "peer group" intervention.

This is so sad that anyone would have had to endure what happened to this little girl. The person who told me was called by a doctor in the local area who was livid that DHS had done nothing for this little girl. Have no idea what was behind that statement.
I cannot even fathom what the people that knew her and the law enforcement types that found the body are going through tonight.
I am all for the Lex guards turning a blind eye to this guy and let the others take care of him and save us the expense of a trial or execution. I want him tortured.
