Neighbor arrested for murder; investigators temporarily rule out chatroom abductor

PURCELL -- Just steps from her father's apartment on N. 8th St, investigators said they identified and apprehended Friday afternoon a 26-year-old man they believe is responsible for the kidnapping and subsequent murder of 10-year-old Jamie Rose Bolin.
Bolin was reported missing after she failed to return home Wednesday afternoon from a trip to the library.
A downstairs neighbor, Kevin Ray Underwood, is being held without bond in the McClain County Jail today and will be charged with one count of first degree murder Monday, said District Attorney Tim Kuykendall at a press conference late Friday night.
"In my 24 years as a prosecutor, I have never, ever been involved in a case that was quite as atrocious, heinous and as cruel as to what happened to this little girl," Kuykendall said. "We intend to seek the death penalty on this."
As of press time, officials were securing search warrants for Underwood's car and apartment, both sites which may yield even more charges, Kuykendall said.
Earlier in the investigation, it was believed Bolin was abducted by a possible Internet contact who drove a dark blue Tahoe. Friday night, Kuykendall said "as it turns out, the information is probably going to be unrelated (to Bolin's murder)."
Police apprehended Underwood at his apartment around 4 p.m. Friday after he began acting suspiciously at a police roadblock earlier that day.
The neighbor, said Bolin's aunt Linda Chiles, "pretty much kept to himself" and was relatively unknown to Bolin or her father, Curtis.
As of press time, Kim Carter of the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, said he was unable to determine how long Bolin was kept alive at the apartment before she was killed, nor were officials able to release any details related to the ongoing investigation.
"This is not like TV, it will not be wrapped up in a 60-second present," he said.
Jamie's uncle, Mark Chiles, still reeling from the news that his 10-year-old niece was kidnapped, likely held against her will and killed, said he warned parents everywhere to "hold onto their kids tight."
"This happened less than 10 feet of where (her father lived)," he said. "People need to know who their neighbors are."
Family members intend to set up an emergency fund at Bank of Oklahoma, Linda Chiles said. For more information, inquire at the Purcell Police Department, 527-4600.

The article is from the Norman Transcript, and the link at the top of this page goes there. The blog is a different place altogether and this link goes to his most recent posting on it. Both links work for me.
How sick can people be. A ten year old.... No matter how often I hear about cases like this, I'll never understand how someone could murder a child.
May God give peace and serenty to this little girl.
Yes, sick is right. And more than one person here: there is also the sicko who was "chatting" with her on the internet, using sexually explicit language. It appears they are treating this as two different cases, but some child predator was also trying to get to this little 10 year old.
Awful. Prayers for the child and the family. May she rest in peace.
I bet we will find out the animal who killed her has prior arrests/convictions for sexual crimes.
Fry. Him.
Smart money says you're right. OTOH, he's young enough this may be the first time he's been caught.
Or his records as a minor have been expunged...
I don't personally like Imus but he doesn't just give lip service to helping children. He deserves praise for that.
I can't imagine living in a society where violent crimes against children is no big deal. I fear when that happens, we may as well close up shop.
Those of us who realize there are no grey areas when it comes to children need to start our own society where children can be children and are protected from predators and those who just don't care.
Autmatic Death Penalty - at the hands of the parents with baseball bats (or whatever choice of hand tools) should be the price.
If, GOD forbid, anyone were to even attempt to hurt one of my children like this animal, the police had BETTER catch him and lock him away, because if I catch him...
*sigh* at least for a couple years, before he's out on parole...
The DA is going to ask for the death penalty. And in Oklahoma, they're usually carried out.
Is anyone else FED UP with the horrific violence inflicted on children by these vile predators and the fact that they're allowed to roam the streets, often after serving minor amounts of time in prison? Why haven't child killers been put to death and those that kidnap but don't murder children should receive automatic life imprisonment, no damned parole.
*sniff* I love a happy ending...
I read this in another article:
Jamie Rose Bolin was reported missing Wednesday night when she didn't return home. Police waited until Thursday night to issue an Amber Alert because no abduction was witnessed and officials suspected she had run away.
But even a prompt alert "probably wouldn't have helped us recover Jamie," said state patrol Lt. Chris West. He offered no further details.

I just wish they'd search the neighbors' homes when these these kids go missing. It seems like several of them have been found right in their neighborhood after it's too late.
Most predators are easy to capture, because their sick desires cloud their judgement, thus making them pretty inept criminals. Unfortunately, our problem isn't in catching predators, it's in keeping them locked up.
