In one of the largest sums ever donated to charity by a U.S. public official, Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife Lynne gave away nearly $7 million last year to help the poor and to medical research.
According to income tax information released by the White House on Friday, the Cheneys' adjusted gross income in 2005 was $8,819,006.
The sum was largely the result of Mr. Cheney's stock options from Halliburton and royalties from three books written by Mrs. Cheney.
The Cheneys gave more than three-quarters of their income - $6,869,655 - to several charities, including George Washington University's Cardiothoracic Institute and a charity for low-income high school students in the Washington, D.C. area, Capital Partners for Education.
The Cheneys' charitable generosity stands in marked contrast to that of their predecessors, whose sometimes stingy donations became a national embarassment.
In 1997 for instance, Al and Tipper Gore contributed just $353 to charity, a sum that raised eyebrows even in friendly media circles.
The Los Angeles Times noted, for instance, that the Gores' slender donation "caused some bewilderment in philanthropic circles because of the vice president's 'good guy' image as an advocate for public service and social causes."
The same year the Gores gave $353 to charity, they reported $197,729 in adjusted gross income.
The Cheneys are good people. It would be interesting to know what the Clintons contribute to charity.
They are. But, the MSM and liberals being who they are, will focus on the $1.9 million refund he got back as a result of these donations.

What the Clintons did give away, was tons of American technology to China, and God knows to who else that has already come back to bite us.
I wonder if they ever feel dumb about donating underwear and taking a tax deduction on it? Naa, not the Clintons!

Watchdog Cites Failures at Charity President Clinton's charitable foundation failed to meet at least six of 19 accountability standards established by the Better Business Bureau, according to a recent report from the watchdog group. The report, issued in June, said the Clinton Foundation lacks policies requiring performance reviews for its chief executive officer and for the organization as a whole. The Better Business Bureau review also observed that the foundation's annual reports and Web site do not contain detailed financial statements or information about the charity's board of directors. In addition, the bureau's charity evaluation service, called the Wise Giving Alliance, said it could not establish whether the foundation was observing five other good-governance practices regarding board meetings, conflict-of-interest policies, budget issues, and donor privacy. "There are a number of concerns here," the head of the alliance, Bennett Weiner, said in an interview. "We didn't get a copy of the audited financial statement. They did have an annual report, but it didn't include specifically the board roster and the summary of finances that is recommended." Mr. Weiner said nonprofit groups that seek money on the Internet should post detailed financial reports online. A spokesman for Mr. Clinton, Jay Carson, said the foundation is working to address the concerns raised by the watchdog group. "In terms of the things brought up in the report, they are all either in place now or will be in place by the end of 2005," he said. Mr. Carson noted that the foundation, which was established in 1997, has been a small operation focused on raising funds to build and endow Mr. Clinton's $165 million presidential library in Arkansas. The spokesman said some of the procedures recommended by the bureau, such as program reviews, will make more sense as the foundation turns greater attention to its ongoing projects, such as efforts to reduce racial strife abroad, to provide drug treatment for HIV/AIDS, and to offer advice to small-business owners in New York

I don't like this donation. I wish he had given it to the RNC instead. Then they would not have needed creeps like abramhoff. A lot of people are sacrificing real money to fund Swann, Ehrlich and Steele in the 2006 elections too.

During the early 1990s, with no apparent presidential aspirations, Kerry contributed the following amounts: $0 in 1991; $820, 1992; $175, 1993; $2,039, 1994; and $0, 1995. Last year, however, after media attention, he gave $43,735.
However, it was painless giving. Kerry published a book -- still available in discount bins -- spelling out his positions on public policy issues. He is drawing from the proceeds to pay his taxes and giving the rest to charity.
In other words, he's polishing his image with proceeds from a book written to further his political career.
Kerry and his wife have a combined net worth between $664 million and $760 million and, because the charitable con- tributions come from the book proceeds, they won't draw down the family treasury.
The question Kerry still needs to answer, however, is why he isn't as generous with his own vast personal wealth as he is with tax money forcibly extracted from everyone else.
