CA: Gov.'s Allies Upset at Enemy Within
LA Times ^ | 4/14/06 | Robert Salladay

SACRAMENTO — Few people have worked harder than Joe Nuñez to sabotage Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's political fortunes. A high-ranking teachers union official, he helped engineer the governor's embarrassing defeat in the special election last year.

So to Republicans, it was nothing short of infuriating and confounding that Schwarzenegger would appoint Nuñez to the state Board of Education. He handed a Democrat and avowed enemy one of the most prestigious patronage jobs in government.

--snip--

Among all Schwarzenegger appointees to state government jobs, regulatory boards and commissions — more than 2,000 in all — about 54% have been Republicans. The rest are Democrats and independents, with a handful from minor political parties.

--snip--

Jon Fleischman, a Republican activist who runs a politics website, said dismissively: "My kindergarten teacher would be a better appointee to the state Board of Education than Joe Nuñez … and I don't even know how she was registered."

The appointment is another example, Fleischman said, of Schwarzenegger's turning away from the GOP, which could dampen the enthusiasm of party activists during the November election. With Democrats fired up about unseating Schwarzenegger, he said, "a vibrant Republican turnout is essential to the governor getting elected."

Although much of his campaign staff and inner circle are Republican, Democrats and independents fill the highest ranks of government as well. They include some of the most influential: Schwarzenegger's chief of staff Susan Kennedy and close advisor Bonnie Reiss. A majority of his appointees to the Air Resources Board, considered one of the most powerful anti-pollution boards in the country, are Democrats, for example.

On Wednesday, Schwarzenegger announced the appointment of Debra Farar, a Democrat and appointee of Davis, to the Cal State University Board of Trustees. Farar was an education advisor to Davis when he was lieutenant governor.

I guess the Trojan Horse still has a few left in his gut to drop, altho there can't be many more positions to fill, at this point.

What better way to stick it to long-time supporters who have stood by the Ca GOP, thru thick and thin, then commandeer it thru subterfuge and the insertion of candidates claiming they are conservative and republican, all the while actually doing more to insert their own liberal leaning agenda driven lackies to kepp doing the job that the dems started, and then when questioned, blame conservatvies and outsiders like some folks here that they are the ones being divisive.

If you buy the pap&hype the New Majority and the moderate movement at FR are pushing, I have a nice bridge with a great view of prime swampland I'd like to show ya.

I'll even throw in a passel of illegals to drain the swamp and paint the bridge for ya and if you bite now, a special offer will include a special interest rate to gain a large bond to secure the property.

Don't worry about electing a dem in November, we already effectively have one in office, he has continued the outrageous rate of spending that existed before the Recall and continues to prepare to do all he can to push an environmental agenda that will only benefit those major donors that backed him then and now, imo.

Let his defender now chime in with the mantra. I have my earplugs in.

Arnold is a Democrat with the R beside his name. As for Trojan Horse, I think that's right. He's done more damage to the GOP than an outright Democrat ever would. Give me ONE reason why the base here should be excited about working to get him re-elected.

I don't understand why he would reward a political enemy with a plum job, I really don't. As far politics go, its one that doesn't make sense. You punish your enemies. You reward your friends. And Arnold hasn't rewarded the people whose support he really needs in an election year. He must have a political death wish to go that far Left.

Excited? Well, no, but one reason might be ILLEGAL ALIEN DRIVER'S LICENSES. Another might be GAY MARRIAGE. Yet another might be MASSIVE TAX INCREASES. All these and more WILL follow on the heels of a democrat victory in November!

This made sense when Reagan was governor and there were substantial numbers of conservative democrats. Now in California, I'm not even sure if there are substantial numbers of Reagan-Republicans. Duncan Hunter may need to take down the last (American) flag when he leaves...

Politics aside, you don't appoint a SCUMBAG like Joe Nuñez to such a position, you just don't!! It's even worse that he's a D and such an active enemy of the Rs, but worst of all is that he's an enemy of honesty, decency, and common sense in education. It is people like him who have been wrecking our educational system for a long time, and now he's rewarded for it.

The appointment was astonishing, for the reasons outlined in this follow-up piece. Am I odd if it makes me wonder whether blackmail or bribery is behind it. I can't think of any reason that an uncorrupted politician would appoint a political foe to any board.

Remember the headline in the 80s (I think) - "Simon to NYC- Drop Dead".

It took the near default on city bonds to bring NYC to a small semblance of fiscal sanity.

Obviously California needs the same thing to wake up to the problems. Let the businesses move out, unemployment and state taxes skyrocket, productive people moving out and deadbeats moving in, crime and illegals proliferating, and maybe, just maybe, California and the rest of the country will wake up.

Nearly 50% of the governor's picks for the bench have been Democrats or independents. Past governors have drawn far more heavily from their own parties to fill the bench and the hundreds of other jobs throughout the bureaucracies.

I really don't care who runs his campaign. I do care who runs State government. How many Republicans does he actually have in his "Inner Circle" and who are they. I can think of about 2.

Because maybe they are not really a political foe. Just part of the script in the agenda to "move leftward".

I respect your work product and your contribution to this forum but I'd suggest a bit more research before repeating urban myths propagated by the MSM and blindly loyal Republicans.

On the State of California website look into SB60, SBX3 1, AB894 and AB1400. Pay attention to the vote on SBX3 1, the constitutional implications of that vote count and the sponsors of the bill. Compare the essential language of AB894 and AB1400, which the Governor addressed on the same day. One with fanfare and one without.

Again, thanks for your humor and your contributions.

They want you to think it's as useless trying to stop a tidal wave with a paper cup, but anyone can see you are absolutely right.

Arnold and CA are worth defending, and the worthless Dems are worth defeating.

In other words, the governor signed legislation approving Gay Marriage in all but name.

Just because he says he is one of us doesn't make it so.

Are folks that gullible and so ready to swallow more debt, more social spending and programs, more more more...?

Apparently so. I, for one, want no part of accommodating or supporting this rush to a "New Majority Utopia" . This is insane behaviour, nothing else, imo.

There are no certainties that any of those will not also be signed off by the Gub when he no longer needs fear either a primary or a general and obviously doesn't have to fear a Recall as that is what got him elected with more support from the left than the right, oddly enough..

Do we need once again to review and repost all the domestic partner legislation he didn't veto AND did sign?

Do we need once again to review the statements that he would sign legislation for illegals DLs if there were "background checks" done, this potentially being part of what he is looking to the Feds for guidance legislation-wise and may not be far off as things are unfolding in DC and we see how gutless many there are as they seek to appease the latest invasion of illegal invaders?

Do we need once again to play semantic games on this and any other number of issues where the libs are getting essentially all and more of what they wanted.. especially when it comes to bonds ( in effect, a tax on our future growth and not an investment as he claims and peddles it solely for the sake of his major donors and lending houses) and the massive offerings to come, along with all the pork projects and posturing and pandering to special interests that goes with it as well, not to mention the waste that inhernetly goes with massive spending like this.

Don't get me wrong as many do and try to make hay out of here. I do believe in choosing the lesser of 2 evils but frankly, I'm having a very difficult time seeing much if any difference between any of the top 3 currently running .

I also have a hard time in the upcoming election accepting any claim by anyone as it being a valid one and representing the will of the people, especially when the GOP side is devoid of any primary as part of the process, where the voters would have been able to speak and vote rather than now be forced to swallow anything they are offered. Is that what we have come to?

I won't go into his recent Global Warming gyrations, his appointments, as many from the left as the right, etc ad nauseum.

I do wonder how many here have been bought off by the
New Majority or work for them to take over FR as they have apparently seized control of the Ca GOP, but I sure see a lot of folks not even wanting to go there, won't even look at social issues especially GLBT ones.

That speaks very loudly to me and makes many suspect here as they make a headlong rush for the cliff's edge, both societally and fiscally, again.. and expect the rest of us to jump with them, a leap of faith that has no certainty of anyone's survival.

Need I go on?

Oh and PS,, why was he and his buddy and past Gub, Pete Wilson, against the 9th Circuit being broken up?

Just curious. ;-)

Yes, I can see how you would prefer to have a governor who would appoint 100% leftist Dems. What I don't understand is how can you call yourself a conservative, when you want to defeat Arnold and elect Angelides, who WILL raise taxes, sign the licenses for illegals bill, the homosexual marriage bill AND appoint 100% FAR LEFTIST DEMS.

Please explain how that would be an improvement over Arnold for the conservatives.

"In other words, the governor signed legislation approving Gay Marriage in all but name."

====

THERE YOU GO AGAIN. Making highly misleading statements.

Schwarzenegger vetoes gay marriage bill as promised

COMPARE WITH ANGELIDES:

Angelides calls himself a champion of "progressive values." As state treasurer, he has pushed public pension funds to dump tobacco stocks, invest in urban renewal projects and pressure corporations into cleaning up the environment. A close ally of labor, he also supports abortion rights, gay marriage, gun control and driver's licenses for illegal immigrants. If he makes it into a general-election race, his call for increasing taxes could pose problems; Schwarzenegger has been steadfast in opposing higher taxes.

Let me ask you again. Please explain how electing Dems and helping them completely take over California advances conservative causes. Do you think conservatives support abortion, drivers liceses for illegal, higher taxes and so on? As cartoonistx aptly pointed out, that is exactly what we all are going to get if a Dem gets elected.

I think we have more to be concerned about the pretend-conservatives /faux-conservatives/DICCs, who want Republicans to stay home in November, vote third party or even Dem "to show the Republicans". Result: DEMS get elected.

You keep proving that the author of The new 'Republicans vote on Wednesday' game (FR mentioned) had exactly people like you in mind.

"But there seems to be a new “Republicans vote on Wednesday” taking form in time for the 2006 election. This effort targets grassroots conservatives known for their passionate views about issues who may be open to a grassroots voting rebellion. But the effort is being led, or at the very least aided, by liberals pretending to be grassroots conservatives, as opposed to actual grassroots conservatives themselves.

The intentions are clear: the caller hopes to make it appear as though there is already a large uprising of conservatives who are rebelling against GOP candidates, and thus, wishes to incite other Republicans to pick up the same attitude and pass it along, leading to the Democrat becoming more competitive.

But the pretend-conservative act is being carried onto a whole new playing field, one that has become wildly influential over the past few years and one that does not stand to be instantly recognized as a fake. That playing field is the blogosphere,

The concept is the same: the blog or e-mail claims, first, that the said writer has been a conservative for years and that they have “had it with Republicans.” They then point to an issue that conservatives would likely be upset about such as excessive spending, immigration, or the expansion of government. Their supposed rage over the issue has convinced them to either not show up to vote in 2006, or, in order to really show Republicans, vote for the Democrat instead. "
