Authorities hunted Friday for a black bear that picked up a 2-year-old boy in its mouth and mauled his mother, critically injuring them before killing the child's 6-year-old sister.
Witnesses told authorities the bear picked up the boy in its mouth while the mother and other visitors tried to fend it off with sticks and rocks, said Dan Hicks, a spokesman for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.
When the bear attacked, the girl ran away, authorities said. Rescuers found the girl's body about 100 yards down the trail from the falls.
A bear was standing over her.
"Allegedly, after the rescue squad found the little girl, one of the squad members fired a shot from a small caliber handgun," Hicks said Friday.
"We don't know whether the bear was hit or not. There was no blood, but it chased it off."
In May 2000, a woman was killed by a black bear near Gatlinburg.
Glena Ann Bradley, a schoolteacher from Cosby, was attacked by two female bears when she took a walk on a trail near a Smoky Mountains campground.

"I get the impression that there is a lot you don't understand."
Well, now I know a lot more about bears than I did before, thanks to a few kind and knowledgeable FReepers. Obviously you're not one of them. It seems that you lurked and made one comment here, and that was to put me down. I'll bet you're just full of information on the subject, so why don't you contribute your expertise?
Was this directed to me ?
"It seems that you lurked and made one comment here, and that was to put me down."
Killer bears are a problem.
Bears which have lost fear of humans are a problem.
People have a right to go anywhere they want and protect themselves from anything threatening them.
Thats a great suggestion.
You also need a few Plott Hounds or Black and Tan Coonhounds to run the thing down.
No, George. It was directed to comment #78....by "Cold Heart".....certainly an appropriate screen name.
I included you in the "To," in order to show all of you others that your comments were appreciated and that I learned something! Thanks!
"People shouldn't wander around in bear country without someone with a large-caliber weapon to watch their back."
Agreed.
But unfortunately, thanks to the anti-gun, anti-hunting crowd, that's not always legal.
The woods, guns, a horse, you have it all, friend.
Thank you.
I learn something new everday on FR.
FR provides a great service where I can read things that the old media will never report.
Get 'er done.
Nice picture.
Idaho is one of few remaining American states.
But my guess is you're safer in the Idaho woods without a gun, surrounded by bears, and wolves and cougars than you would be in most neighborhoods in the major cities of America with a pistol.
Thank you, life is good and summer's coming in the NW. :~D
"Say, I've found a perfect spot to catch us a bear."
"How can you be sure?"
"I saw a sign that said Fine for Hunting."
How the heck can I learn to past pictures on here - simply.
These are great.
The cubs that were with mama, there is a third one out of the picture. A rare sighting of triplicate cubs.
I agree! Free Republic is addictive. I haven't made a bed, cleaned my house, or done the laundry since September 6, 2004! And now I know about bears! (Okay, the real truth is that I know about bears, food they prefer, why bears attack, bear hunting, and about their territory.)
Honestly, this (Free Republic), is a real wealth of information, isn't it?..... so many people from all walks of life. Everyone has much to contribute, and we all learn so much.
LOL!
How far away were you when you took that photo?
How are the suppose to know what bear did this anyway? Thsi is moronic, and a bunch of morons will surely kill bears that were not even involved. If people want to eliminate all chances of getting attacked by a shark then they shouldn't go in the ocean. The same goes for bears in the woods. I think people have enough space to do what they want, and if you walk around one of the few habitats bears have left then you are responsible for the bsafety of yourself and that of your children. If a bear ever attacks someone in Central Park then they can take it out.
I know someone who got carjacked by a bear.
On almost any topic, there is much discussion and often good links for further research.
There are many good people here on FR and it is good to visit with them.
Be Well.
