(April 13, 2006)—Peace activist Cindy Sheehan is back in Texas to join a weekend protest near the President’s Crawford-area ranch, but this time neither the President nor the White House press corps will be there.
After spending the last five Easter weekends at his Central Texas Ranch, Mr. Bush decided to go to Camp David this year.
Anti-war demonstrators say the President is running from them and their message.
“We chased him away from his ranch,” Sheehan said.
Sheehan is the California woman whose roadside protest in August near the Bush ranch attracted international attention.
Her 24-year-old son Casey, a 1st Cavalry Division soldier, died in 2004 in Iraq.
The group's third Crawford protest in less than a year includes candlelight vigils, a rally and a march.
Rev. Joseph Lowery, who co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with Martin Luther King, Jr. is scheduled to speak at a sunrise Easter Sunday service.
A candlelight vigil is planned Thursday night at which Sheehan is scheduled to speak.
A peace walk is on the program for Friday morning.
The President’s supporters, meanwhile, plan an Easter egg roll Saturday for military children and their families.
The egg roll is from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday at Tonkawa Park in Crawford.
“While Cindy Sheehan and her band of followers are right down the road calling for the impeachment of our president, we will have a park full of heroes and Texas Republican Women that stand behind President Bush, our soldiers and their mission,” organizers said in a prepared release.
