(AP) McCain Courting Iowa Conservatives Apr 13 2006
By MIKE GLOVER Associated Press Writer
DES MOINES, Iowa
Republican Sen. John McCain is courting conservative activists, crucial to any White House hopes, in an early test of his political strength.
He has his work cut out for him in Iowa.
"I don't want to say it's an insurmountable hurdle, but it's a big, big hill to climb," said Steve Scheffler, who heads the Iowa Christian Alliance, formerly the Christian Coalition. "There's no support for McCain in this constituency, and I don't see how you can make a scenario where you can bypass us."
The Arizona senator, who skipped Iowa's leadoff caucuses in his unsuccessful bid for the GOP nomination in 2000, planned a hectic itinerary through the state Thursday, raising money for local politicians and wooing conservatives in private meetings.
Cast as the Republican front-runner in a nascent presidential campaign, McCain has reached out to the conservatives he alienated in 2000, even seeking to make amends with evangelist Jerry Falwell, whom he once labeled intolerant.
Yep, isn't going to work.
When he finally realizes that, get's angry and runs third party, he could actually draw more Democratic voters than Republicans.
Lipstick-Pig ALERT!
I love how the media makes it seem the only reason we don't like him is because of Jerry Falwell. Puuuuhlease!
His immigration bill certainly isn't going to help.
How bout Mount Everest in the middle of winter.
Not gonna happen.
Right, I guess this is the crux of the problem. This guy is NOT a Republican! My theory is that the Left thinks he'll bamboozle the conservatives and the Rats will have elected "their" president. Brilliant!... Nahhh
Can we forget he was considered to be the vice president of Kerry? :)
McCain was being praised on NPR this morning. And we all know the reasons. Although he says he's a conservative, he's not and that's why they like him and are pushing for him. He votes against tax cuts, undermines judicial nominees and real immigration reform, worries more about worthless terrorists getting "tortured" than innocent people getting their heads cut off with a dull knife, etc.
He has Lindsay Graham's support. That won't get him SC. It'll just put him in the pantheon of people who didn't get the nomination a la George Romney.
There is simply to many things to forget about McPain, including him. I don't think the next nominee has taken the field yet, despite the poseurs already running around.
There is no doubt that Romney is a good speaker and can hold his own. It's what he stands for that falls short.
So who've you got? The "real Conservatives" here seem to think that all they have to do is find one..."and the votes will come". I haven't seen that before and don't tell me about Ronald Reagan. Anyone could have beaten Carter in 1980 and in 1984 St Ronald had the luxury of running against Fritz Mondane who stupidly promissed to raise taxes. We got lucky to elect Reagan. What's the "real Conservative" strategy for 08?
'Nuff said.Wait until late '07 and see who is going to step forward. We have only one president at a time, despite the lefties trying to make the campaign begin after the last election they lose is over.
I don't think we know who is going to run yet. The days of 'it's his turn Dole' are over.
