Illegal immigration creates many problems, but a sunk economy isnt one of them ... they are coming from the pathetic economy , to the country with the good economy. Historically, when our country gets in a recession, more migrants go home.

Any state could pass laws and/or work to enforce immigration laws with the INS.

In fact, that is a very good idea! Just have your own STATE pass a law that demands: All arrested individuals be checked for immigration status and detained if not legal resident.
Incredibly, we dont do that in most locales.

I can tell you first hand that Mexicans are pouring across the border in record numbers. Some of the illegals the MM have assisted apprehending have told us that in Mexico they are saying America has passed amnesty and they need to get over here ASAP. Meanwhile Border Patrol is just swamped; agents are estimating illegal traffic is up 40-50%. Listening to BP on the scanner one night last week I quit counting at 500 the number of sensors that were tripped on the border south of Sasabee (unofficial count on 4/6/06 between 9pm -2am; I was on communications until 6am that night).AWB
