Amtrak service on both north and southbound tracks has come to a halt after a bridge support was damaged in Rocky Mount Wednesday evening. -- Until the repairs are made, no rail traffic north or southbound can happen south of Rocky Mount. All trains between Florida and Rocky Mount will be cancelled as a result, as well as any trains in northern areas headed south of Rocky Mount. There is no current estimate on the number of trains affected.

Bump!
North Carolina?
Yes. Traffic north and south is at a dead stop; you can get to Rocky Mount from the north, but you can't go any further; you can get to Rocky Mount from the south, but you can't go any further.
This is going to really screw up a lot of Easter vacations.
You mean the college kids are going to stay in Florida? OMG!
It's going to be a freight problem too.
I thought it was the Rocky Mountains you were talking about.
Luckily I flew today. Never even noticed it.
I have been through there several times on the way to/from Floriduh, though. Usually in the middle of the night.
Everything stops Amtrack. I'm amazed they have any trains at all.
Well, that's better than Braking News in this case. Glad no trains took a dive off this.
bump
Har har!
Well there's only one solution for this. Throw more money at the broken down, government subsidized boondoggle called Amtrak.
Dang, that is one LOOOONG train, at least most days.
For those of you who don't know, Rocky Mount straddles the county line between Nash county to the west and Edgecombe county to the east. The rail line marks the border. I never knew what the phrase "The wrong side of the tracks" really meant until I moved here.
Me too.
I was going to do an Atlas Shrugged reference.
CD, did you hear anything about this?
Rim shot!
Well, I don't know about in your area but here we only take the train to Florida if we aren't in a hurry. The train is usually hours to a day behind. No one would probably notice:') It's a nice ride though, if you are just cruising .
RALEIGH, N.C. Repairs on a bridge in eastern North Carolina have interrupted Amtrak train service between Florida and the Northeast, likely through Friday, the company said Wednesday.
CSX Transportation closed the bridge about 10 miles north of Selma Wednesday afternoon after determining during a routine inspection that it needed repairs. Several trains to and from Florida that were to use the route Wednesday were being returned to their points of origin, according to a news release.
The repairs are expected to be completed by Friday, with Amtrak altering or canceling some routes scheduled for Thursday.
Amtrak has canceled service by the New York-Miami Silver Star (Trains 91 and 92) and Silver Meteor (Trains 97 and 98), and the Lorton, Va.-Sanford, Fla., Auto Train (Trains 52 and 53) through Thursday. Alternate transportation is unavailable, Amtrak said.
In addition, the New York-Charlotte Carolinian (Trains 79 and 80) and the New York-Savannah, Ga., Palmetto (Trains 89 and 90) will run only from New York to Rocky Mount, N.C., on Thursday. Amtrak will provide bus transportation for the remainder of the routes.
Amtrak is offering refunds and future travel dates for affected passengers.
Amtrak will wait to announce disruptions to Friday's routes until after learning the status of bridge repairs, spokeswoman Vernae Graham said Wednesday night.

The WRAL story says the damage was discovered during an inspection after a wreck damaged bridge supports, but they don't say what kind of a wreck they were talking about. Sloppy reporting.
The Telegram story says "During a routine inspection" it was found to be in need of repair.
Amtrak website doesn't say nothin'.
Constitution Day, can you give us the real story?
Amtrak aside, the only thing I wish we had of Europe's is their rail system. I would rarely drive anywhere if we did.
