A majority of Americans said they oppose amnesty for illegal aliens, so-called "undocumented workers" from other nations who are already residing in the United States, according to a recent Zogby International survey.
While 52 percent said there should be no amnesty, 32 percent said they would favor amnesty for illegal aliens who currently reside in the United States.
The U.S. Congress has estimated that there are 11 million illegal immigrants now living in America. Amnesty was offered to people in this category during the Reagan administration, but it did little to stem the tide of illegal immigration into the country, primarily via the U.S.-Mexico border.
As Congress now works on immigration reform legislation in Washington, the survey shows there is a significant partisan divide on this question. Among self-identified Democrats nationwide, 51 percent favor amnesty, while 29 percent oppose it. Another 20 percent said they are unsure on the issue.
Among self-identified Republicans participating in the survey, just 13 percent said they favor amnesty, while 76 percent said they oppose such an offer.
A majority of political independents are opposed to offering amnesty 50 percent said they are against it, while 33 percent said they are in favor of it.
This question also divides the nation based on age of the respondents. While younger respondents favor amnesty in greater numbers, older likely voters do not.
YES, I SEE IT CLEARLY.
SAY NO TO AMNESTY - IT'S A POLITICAL WINNER!
"While 52 percent said there should be no amnesty, 32 percent said they would favor amnesty for illegal aliens who currently reside in the United States. "
Americans oppose amnesty by 5 to 3 margin.
Easiest way to cruise to pubbie victories in '06 & '08.
Partisans do all the campaigning, but Independents normally decide elections.
The government couldn't give a rip about what the citizenry wants. "Don't like amnesty? Well then, let's just call it something like 'guest worker program'. There now. All better."
Now we know why the comment, "they are here to do the jobs Americans won't do"
You're right American CITIZENS won't threaten to shut down ports, railroads and Wall Street, and our economy!
That's DOMESTIC TERROISM plain and simple.
The terroists on 911 said they hit the WTC to affect OUR ECONOMY!!
FAX THE TRANSCRIPT FROM DOBBS SHOW TO EVERY SENATOR AND CONGRESS!!!
Tell them these are people who broke into our country illegally and are now threatening our economy, ports, wall street,
They are NOT to be allowed to become citizens and given amnesty or even brought in for any worker program
these terroists must be deported immediately and the border closed tight!!!!
So in other words, Bush is running counter to 3/4s of his party with his pseudo-amnesty program.
That is not the mark of smart politics - especially since he is not up for re-election but the House pubbies are.
I've heard a lot of ranting on FR about third parties. That is not the answer this election, IMO, as long as the House continues to fight the good fight on this issue.
But the flip side is, those folks decrying any third-party talk need to act as well - they need to tell the Bush Admin that the pseudo-amnesty program is hurting the re-election chances of those pubbies running for election this year. If you are truly serious about having the GOP hold onto the House and Senate this year, tell the guy who is not running for office - Bush - to quit hurting those who are running.
Before taking a poll, the word AMNESTY needs to be defined. Currently, from what I understand, if asked, Bush does not favor amnesty, yet what he is proposing does, in fact, eventually provide amnesty for those who are already here, illegally.
How can their be accurate polling of the public? IMO, the only way that there can be NO amnesty, is to send all illegals home FIRST. Then they apply for admission. Correct?
I don't buy it. We have an office that I would say that it is 50/50 dems and republicans. In the last 2 months or so, we have talked to probably 90% about the immigration problem. .. .It just comes up. Only one person has favored amnesty. ONE. And he is a Conservative... . who hires a lot of Mexicans.
Did I mention I am near Philadelphia?
It looks like the Democrats are more split over the issue of amnesty than the Republicans.
