PAKISTANI gunship helicopters destroyed a suspected militant compound in a restive tribal region bordering Afghanistan, killing a number of foreign insurgents, a military source said.
The raid, conducted overnight on the basis of "confirmed intelligence", targeted a hideout in Nagar, six kilometres south of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan, the source said on condition of anonymity.
Pakistani forces have carried out a series of operations against suspected militants in lawless North Waziristan over the past month and a half. The military said around 250 rebels and five soldiers have been killed.
"A sting operation with the help of Cobra gunship helicopters has resulted in the knocking out of a military hideout," the source said. "Some foreign militants were killed."
The source had no details of how many militants were killed in the operation nor of their nationalities.
"The action was carried out on the basis of confirmed intelligence on the presence of foreign militants," the source said.
Pakistan has deployed 80,000 troops along the border to hunt down militants who sought refuge in the rugged tribal area after the Taliban regime in neighbouring Afghanistan was toppled in late 2001.
Officials have previously said they believe al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden and his deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri are hiding in the frontier region between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
President Pervez Musharraf last month warned foreign insurgents to leave the tribal belt or be killed.
Well done, boys!!!

This raid was why AlQ had to release a new videotape. They have to use the broadcast news media to assure their independent cells that Al-Q leadership is still alive.
