The Protests -- Whose Backlash?
Real Clear Politics ^ | March 31, 2006 | Victor Davis Hanson

Hundreds of thousands of Mexican citizens, along with Mexican-Americans and Hispanics in general, hit the streets throughout the United States this past week in one of the largest displays of public outrage since the Vietnam-War era.

The conventional wisdom was that the supposedly spontaneous outbursts of immigrant pride and anger took lawmakers by surprise. In response, politicians may backtrack on some of the tougher proposals concerning border enforcement, from constructing a wall to deportations. The media tended to emphasize the heartfelt anguish of the demonstrators, who often on selected televised clips carried American flags and were shown reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Americans recoil at the volatile ethnic enclaves in France and the Netherlands--and can understand how such tribalism could quickly escalate to sectarian violence in Iraq, the Balkans, and Rwanda. Unless we curb the present influx, return to the melting pot, and salvage a legal remedy from the present illegal disaster, what we saw this week may only be the beginning of something far more dangerous from both sides of this avoidable crisis.

About sums it up for me.

Cool ..when I got back from RVN in late 69 Americans spit on me and those I came home with...

Today I can have foreigners spit on me in America for opposing their invasion...

That's some real progress...

private counter-reactions to them, I fear, are going to grow larger and angrier still

That's an understatement if I ever saw one. The entire situation is absurd. Especially around Federal income tax time. I'm so glad the government is demanding that I hand over 30% of my pay while they fail at the most basic function of a national government-> defining borders.

If the government will not fulfill its enumerated duties under the Constitution maybe they should step down.

If I didn't pay taxes for 5 years the government wouldn't be offering me amnesty, they'd send jackboots in bulletproof vests with submachineguns to bust down my door and put me in prison. Now these mexicans not only evade income taxes for 5+ years, they sneak in illegally, contribute nothing to social security, and don't register for selective service. All of which should be felonies.

"The media tended to emphasize the heartfelt anguish..."

Ha, no shite. Djoo catch the CNN special on illegal immigration last Sunday? Here's the short version: illegals are all here to work, be Americans, and contribute to the country; people who oppose them are misguided.

Here's one little nugget that almost cost me my TV: some illegal, who apparently owns a car and rents a house, saved up $5k to have a smuggler get her 2 kids here. They were caught at the border and sent back. She's saving to try again.

I work 2 jobs. My wife works very little so she can be with our baby. We are pretty much broke. It'll be alot of years before I can even conceive of saving $5k. But I guess driving an uninsured car and being paid cash/tax-free would help out quite a bit.

How does one go about becoming an illegal alien? I think it would really help my bottom-line.

Folks I know who live near the border say that it's already what is known in the military as a "low intensity conflict" between the druggies, coyotes, BP, and legal US residents. There are a number of predictions that will increase to a "high intensity level conflict" (read war) within 5 to 10 years.

And no one in Washington gives a hoot!

These morons don't realize that if they don't play by the rules, they weaken this country. If that is their goal, they will end up with a new Mexico. In other words, another piece of crap country they will have to flee again.

If they think this is a great place, they shouldn't try to change it to what they want. We already set it up to be great. Don't break it. Otherwise, go back to their great Mexico and fix that mess. It's more of a challenge. If they succeed at that, they can do anything!

The more pressure we keep on Mexico, immigration-wise, the more reformers
inside of Mexico can be emboldened and empowered to scale back monopolists'
abuses down there which keep our own country flooded with economic refugees.
Here's an interesting new thread on new legal reform progress that finally
emerged in Mexico I think as a result of immigration reform's failure:

We can make a difference for our sake, and their's as well. Isn't it the
neighborly thing to do?

I don't think they need health insurance either. They show up to an emergency room and WE foot the bill with higher premiums.

No health insurance bills, no auto insurance bills, preferential treatment among some employers, etc.
