CHICAGO Illinois northernmost bit is north of Cape Cod and its southern tip is south of Richmond, Va.
Scattered the length of the state, from the Wisconsin to the Kentucky border are fragments of wreckage from the state party that produced the first Republican president.
In the last four presidential elections, Republican candidates have averaged just 40 percent of the Illinois vote. In 2004, the Republican Senate candidate, a raging resident of Maryland, won just 27 percent of the vote.
Judy Topinka, 62, the effervescent three-term state treasurer and Republican gubernatorial nominee against Gov. Rod Blagojevich, thinks she can put Humpty Dumpty together again. Republicans everywhere should hope a new poll is accurate in showing her three points ahead among registered voters.
In California, Republican presidential candidates have not been competitive for three elections. Since 1994, when California Republicans backed an anti-immigrant measure offensive to the Latino population that now is more than one-third of the states population, Republicans have won an average of just 41 percent of the presidential vote.
In New York, where Republican presidential candidates in the last four elections have averaged just 35 percent, one candidate for the Senate nomination against Hillary Clinton this year has zero political experience and less-than-zero credibility, having inflated her resume. And if the state party chairman gets his way, the senatorial candidate will be a former Yonkers mayor, who as a married man had two children with his unmarried chief of staff. (He has now married her.)
From Illinois, California and New York, Democratic presidential nominees currently receive, without exertion, 107 electoral votes 40 percent of the 270 needed to win the presidency.

Topinka is a RINO, similar to Rod in ideology. He victory would be shallow at best.
Hardly the type of Republican you need. A liberal socialist gun controller.
This is an example of George Will with NO clue what he is talking about. A Topinka win (which is REMOTE at best) will do NOTHING to make the ILL. GOP stronger, revitalized, or better. It will be a mere passing phase during which the Ill. GOP will founder ever worse.
Topinka is not much of a Republican (a Linc. Chaffee sort) and the bulk of the Party is NOT standing for her.
Sorry, pal. I just can't bring myself to do it. Illinois consevatives got 51% of the primary vote for guv, unfortunately we had two candidates who refused to yield to each other. Judas Toopinka cruised to victory with a whopping 38% of the vote.
The Dems have a problem this time
around since too many people don't
like the kid Governor, Blagojevich.
Chicago is being scrutinized again
for all the undercover payoff
positions, Mayor Daley is showing
his age, and the Reps are coming
out with some decent options now
that the public is fully aware of
how the Dem program of Personal Assault
works. There are even some suggesting
Ryan wasn't all that bad!
That said, I'm still not a Topinka
fan!
RAT machines have always used their patronage and jobs filling abilities to buy votes of the lower classes. It has been that way from the beginning of the Republic.
Without cities one does not have civilization or culture. Blanket condemnations of them are as silly as complaining that there is an anus in the human body so the whole thing stinks.
No Topinka vote from me. We have the choice between two Democrats this election.
If she is a gun grabber and is nominated to oppose Blago, then I would be very surprised if she can win. What has Blago done for folks to reject him in favor of a dem-light like Topinka?
i would prefer to see Topinka win if for no other reason to offset GOP Gov. losses in other states like NY. We have a shot here, in Michigan, Maine and Iowa to flip governorships. Unfortunately the Dems will flip NY and have a shot at CA, CO, Mass., and Maryland
Sigh. Surrender core constitutional principal for a single office?
If you want to vote for a conservative, vote for the Constitution Party candidate, Randall C. Stufflebeam. Why not?

Blago balanced the state budget by raiding the pension funds of state workers. Plus, he appointed a black Muslim to the state hate crimes commission. The black Muslim supports Louis Farrakhan's assertion that "Hollywood Jews and homosexuals misled Bush into invading Iraq." The Jewish members of the hate crimes commission resigned on disgust. Blago is standing by the black Muslim.
Even though she is a gun-grabber, we should all support Topinka.
I don't see much civilization or culture in modern cities. Distress More Likely in New York(City), Study Finds
I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Maybe in the arts, for what they're worth. I'm not impressed. K - 12 public education is generally an abomination.
