Polish group developing 'Hasidic Judaism Trail' for tourists

By DPA

Visitors to Poland will soon have the opportunity of discovering the orthodox Jewish tradition by going on the Hasidic Judaism Trail.

The Institute for the Preservation of Jewish Culture and the Carpathia Institute are currently developing the project, the online edition of the daily Gazeta Wyborza reported.

"We believe the trail will encourage development of the region's tourist infrastructure," says Malgorzata Bakalarz, the project's coordinator.

The trail will pass through the regions of Lublin and Subcarpathia and cities such as Zamosc, Lesko, Lezajsk and Tarnobrzeg whose pre-war population was mostly Jewish.

The small town of Lezajsk already receives thousands of orthodox Jewish visitors every year, who come to see the grave of Elimelech Weissblum, one of the founders of Hasidic Judaism.

Apart from Jewish graveyards there are several synagogues and buildings that still stand as a reminder to Poland's Jewish heritage.

Bakalarz says an information centre is due to open in Zamosc.

But the plan is eventually to extend the trail beyond Poland's borders into Ukraine and possibly even to Hungary, Slovakia and Romania.

My son organizes such "trails" throughout Russian Federation, Belarus, Ukraine, and elsewhere in the former Soviet Union.

They can have Hungary, Slovakia and Romania. Ukraine is already taken.
