IMMIGRATION POLITICS: MARCHING MADNESS (pro-aliens deranged conduct hurting cause)
NY POST ^ | April 11, 2006 | JOHN PODHERETZ

Posted on 04/11/2006 4:46:47 AM PDT by Liz

........the idea that something has to be done about illegal immigration is in part due to politically deranged conduct on the part of those who claim to be working on behalf of illegal aliens. The demonstrations that have drawn hundreds of thousands to the streets in cities across the country in the past few days - are politically incomprehensible.

If their purpose is to influence the political debate in a direction favorable to the interests of illegal aliens, then their organizers are deluded.

The rapidly rising concern about the issue is a clear indication that the first round of demonstrations a few weeks ago, featuring Mexican flags dominating American flags and wild talk about American imperialism, were self-defeating......they are still in violation of the laws of the United States. The more people demonstrate on their behalf, the more the illegality of their actions is highlighted.

Americans are a law-abiding people, and they don't go for that sort of thing.

The demonstrations are the best advertisements possible for the idea that America must get tough on illegal immigrants and tighten its immigration policies.

That's what's so peculiar about these demonstrations. There is no chance on earth that Congress is going to adopt a wildly liberal set of policies on illegal immigration......immigration interest groups and others seem intent on radicalizing the debate, in making it clear to many people.....that the pro-immigrant side is nuts and the anti-immigrant side is more sensible.

Which is why the demonstrations make no sense from a sheerly partisan standpoint either. If they're designed to help the Democratic Party in its pursuit of majority status in the House and Senate in November 2006, then their organizers are profoundly stupid.............

No matter how you slice it, these demonstrations were and are a horrible mistake.

We have had the initiative on this issue for a long time.

I wouldn't put it quite that strongly. We talk about it here on FR and other forums, but our leaders remain unconvinced. JPod is right that these demsonstrations have provided an opportunity, i.e. more Americans leaning our way. There's a grand opportunity just waiting for a leader to pick up the banner. I think that leader would propose something like this:

1) Enforceable borders...nothing less.

2) Makes clear that LEGAL immigrants are welcome and respected members of our society. If he's smart, he would always be flanked by a stage full of grateful LEGAL immigrants, available to the press after the event. This is not about them.

At the same time, it wouldn't hurt to say we also respect those who came here illegally and have contributed to our economy/society. But the U.S. has an obligation to control its borders, keep its citizens safe, and emphasize the well being of its citizens.

3) Separate the green-card process from the citizenship process. If a foreigner wants to come work temporarily he doesn't have to meet the same "assimilation" requirements (as if he plans to stay permanently!). Reserve the "assimilation" test for those applying for citizenship. Make the assimilation req'mts tough and enforceable (English, knowledge of the constitution, clean record, loyalty pledge, etc.). I would add that anyone ever caught trying to slip across the border illegally (or continuing to stay here illegally) is disqualified from ever applying for citizenship.

4) Here is where I lose most of you on these threads. A national I.D. card. The first objection is always the roadblock/your-papers-please argument. But the same people demand we "deal with" the illegals. Just how do we deal with them if we can't identify them?! Well-meaning posters seem to demand a process whereby illegals can be identified while LEGALS will never be asked for "their papers". The current proposals are even more absurd---they depend on illegals to SELF-IDENTIFY. They are guaranteed to fail.

Thus, I've come to support the opposite: a system whereby LEGALS self-identify...to receive a biometric card. By doing so we cull out the illegals BY DEFAULT. Politically, it has the advantage of not targeting the "sensitive" population. We would simply be taking the problem into our own hands...who can criticize us for simply stepping forward and affirming our citizenship (or legal green card, visa, etc.)? I find a lot of people agreeing with this. The time has come for a principled politician to SELL these points.

Lastly, the national ID would be tied into a database that employers could use to verify legal residency. The current system is totally useless because of forged documents. I would like to see the entire apparatus tied into the payroll tax reporting system. Make it impossible to report withholding taxes unless the worker is legal. Then impose very heavy fines on anyone who employs illegal workers.

We need to go to biometric scanning to validate voters.

Please see my point 4) above. I would strongly support biometric ID at the polls.

WOW! That's a mouthful.

No one is impressed by this conspiracy of spineless marionettes dancing limply on the strings of corruption, manipulated by the unseen alien horde puppetmasters lurking behind the scenes, ready to pounce on US assets.

But I DO plan go see my great senator (Sessions) during the Easter break and present this to him.

Wish me luck.

To the contrary, I think. The pictures of hundreds of thousands of illegals marching to demand citizenship with no counter-demonstrations to ship them home and seal the borders simply shows that the illegals have already won. And a country with no borders cannot survive.

Would it be effective if local communities set up roadblocks and check points during protests and didn't let illegals back in? Even better, use their school buses to provide a free trip to Cancun or Tijuans. They sure know how to check us for DUI and after hurricanes.

It is time to report illegals. All of them. Call your local branch of the INS and repost all those Mexicans in the local resturaunts from Maine to Florida.

It is time to report illegals. All of them.

How do you recommend we identify them? As an employer I can tell you they DO have documents. Yes, I suspect many are forgeries, but how am I to know which ones are valid?

That's the problem with trying to identify the "illegal population". Rather, I think we should place the emphasis on identifying the LEGAL population....voila!...the illegals are identified by default.

Call the INS and let them sort it out. Assume all Mexicans and South Americans are illegal until otherwise proven. It is called profiling and it is useful. Stop acting like a liberal and use your head.

.....report to ICE all those Mexicans in the local restaurants from Maine to Florida....

And make sure you contact the fast-food corporate offices, as well.

You will not patronize these places unless they ditch the Mexicans---and hire American workers.

Tell them it would be worth it to pay 10-20 cents more for a hamburger to have Americans waiting on you.

Americans do not reward people for breaking the law. The illegal invasion has concentrated the attention of Americans on the nature of democracy and its central bulwark against anarchy---our Constitution and the rule of law.

But those pimps in Congress will fall all over themselves to help illegals-damn the Americans who are paying the bills!

I was VERY ambivalent about these hard-working Mexicans, BUT after these marches and the "You OWE me" rhetoric, I am hardening.

Americans are very understanding people. None of us wanted to deprive poor people of a decent living and hope for a better future from their miserable existences in Third World countries..................that is to say, until we saw them in the streets, planning to organize a separate subculture of foreign speaking illegals in the US, and live off US bounty, all paid for by American taxpayers.

The illegal invasion has concentrated the attention of Americans on the nature of democracy and its central bulwark against anarchy---our Constitution and the rule of law.
