Democracy and Islamic Law Don't Mix, Iraqi Official Says

Despite President Bush's insistence that the Iraqi "people want there to be a democracy," a pro-American member of Iraq's new parliament claims there is "no relationship between Islam and democracy."

Islamic or "sharia" law has "nothing to do with democracy or human rights," according to Iyad Jamal Al-Din, and mixing Islam and democracy "is like mixing Marxists and capitalists." Al-Din escaped Saddam Hussein's Iraqi regime in 1979 but returned and was elected to the Iraqi Parliament last Dec. 15. He addressed an April 6 luncheon sponsored by the Middle East Media Research Institute.

Al-Din is an outspoken supporter of the U.S. military's presence in Iraq but is critical of the new Iraqi Constitution, which he complained still relies too heavily on religious principles. Al-Din favors a secularized form of government.

From their own lips they verify that Muslims in Europe will never accept democracy. You gotta love this guy.

Tefft said some Iraqi Shi'ites are cooperating with the U.S. in order to hasten the withdrawal of American military forces. But the cooperation is "not because they believe in democracy, because they don't," he said. Democracy is "anti-Islam," Tefft added.

My worst fear- a charade just to get us out sooner.

Democracy and Islamic law don't mix? No? Really? Does everyone know this? Seems like it is something everybody should be told about. No?

I fear he is right.

Our laws are based on Judeo Christian principles.

Iraq's laws are based on "sharia" law which has "nothing to do with democracy or human rights," ... .

Good point, but what does it have to say about the Muslims here in the good old US of A?

If what he says is true,it's just another of 1000 reasons why "islam" should be tossed in the trashcan of history.

"nothing to do with democracy or human rights,"

As we say over here, "No Duh!"

Sharia law enslaves and democracy frees. What's your point sir?

This certainly seems to support a "cut and run" approach to this war- very disappointing.

All you have to do is read or listen to Farrakhan's rants and you'll understand that he completely agrees with this guy.

Rush's clip this morning of one of the student questions that involved the oldest constitution being written by the founder of islam bypassed Aristotle and his monstrous compilation of constitutions. It was a hobby of Aristotle to collect constitutions, and each city had its own. Long before islam.

I'm not an authority on either but I suggest that both are secular governments and not islamic democracies.

In Indonesia, Sukarno and then Suharto kept the state secular until recently and there have been some frighten trends of late with a push for sharia.

As to Turkey, its secularist government is maintain by the Kemalists still in powerful positions.

I think the jury is still out as to which way things will go
