Montgomery Is Criticized Over Credit for Students

The Montgomery County schools' decision to grant students community service credit for attending Monday's immigration rights protest is raising concern among some parents as well as activists who say officials should focus on education, not political advocacy. Montgomery is the only Washington area school system offering students credit for taking part in the event, to be held on the Mall -- a decision Superintendent Jerry D. Weast said is consistent with how the system has operated. "This is nothing new,'' schools spokesman Brian K. Edwards said about the decision. "Advocacy is allowed." But in the superheated atmosphere surrounding the immigration debate, the decision is drawing sharp criticism from many quarters. Yesterday, school system offices were flooded with angry phone calls as word of its action circulated among conservative radio hosts. In a memo sent to Board of Education members, Weast said that "callers were abusive to school system staff, using derogatory ethnic comments in expressing their views." He added, "This is not the first time the national debate on immigration policy has engendered harsh commentary for the school

I do believe the school district needs to adjust the personnel to better reflect American values...

I’d like to see the list of “advocacy events” for which kids received credit, in order to identify all the conservative causes that have qualified over the years.

What if the kids spent their time working with the Minutemen? Would that count for the "community service credit"?

That's it, keep on running. Only about 2,000 miles to go before you're home in Mexico.

'At the Mississippi Capitol, they sang "We Shall Overcome" in Spanish.'

Why is it that everyone wants to hijack the civil rights movement for their own cause?

Has anyone verified the rumor about the Dims passing out pamplets to protesters showing Texas and Mexico as one state and urging them to vote for Democraps?

This is another reason the whole "community service" requirement should be abolished.

Conservatives students get credit for attending pro-life marches.

Conservative students get credit for attending Republican rallies.

There is nothing new here.

.....I do believe the school district needs to adjust the personnel to better reflect American values...

There is far more to it than what you surmise.

I saw a Republican member (local party chairman)of the school board lay it all out.

The state of Maryland requires 60 hours of community service. The service can be rendered to any bonefide non profit including advocacy Nonprofits. 501c3's. The service can and sometimes is of a political nature but that is allowed. The NP must provide an accounting of the time in a letter to the school.

The kids did not get out of school, it was a holiday...Easter break. The service hours are after school never during school.

The problem is with the State of Maryland, not the school district.

Precisely. Government social engineering never works.
