Americans support building a security fence along the entire 2,000 mile U.S.- Mexican border by a landslide, a new Time magazine poll has found.
By a margin of 56 to 40 percent, respondents said they want the wall built from sea to shining sea - not just the 700 miles stipulated in the House plan, a proposal the press calls "draconian."
In more evidence that the American people want a tougher crackdown on illegal immigration than anything favored by Congress or the media, 62 percent told Time that they favored using the military to guard the border. Just 35 percent opposed.
But the poll's biggest shocker may be on the question of deporting illegals back to their native country, an option that politicians and the press say is out of the question.
Time found, however, that 47 percent of those surveyed actually favor deporting "all illegal immigrants." 49 percent were opposed.
And 51 percent said the U.S. would be "better of" if all illegals were deported and the border sealed to prevent any more from coming in. Just 38 percent disagreed.
A full 75 percent say illegals should be denied government supplied healthcare and food stamps, with 21 percent saying they should get those benefits. 69 percent say illegals shouldn't be allowed to get U.S. drivers licenses.
Time surveyed 1004 adult Americans on March 29 and 30. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 3 percent
You bet we do!! 100%!
So much for the claims by a few folks on FR that opposition to illegal immigration is a fringe issue (not that we were fooled, mind you).
Don't tell me the conservative base in America speaks only for themselves. It's polls like this that explain the success of Reagan and Bush.
I favor criminal charges against all employers who hire illegal aliens.
To cure future problems, I propose a North American manifest destiny.
It's from that ultra-right wing propagnda machine Time! This can't be accurate, Mr. President.< /sarc>

The other, somewhat interlocking element is this one:

Note, and note well--that the infamous"Mexican Flag Superior, American in Distress" is in the upper left corner...
Take a look, and follow all the links at #1158-1155.
What is happening under the radar is that the alien lobby, certain elements of radical Islam, and some on the Left share common goals, tactics, and exploitations of our system and society.
Not a conspiracy, but rather a "coming together on common points."
Mexico needs a serious corruption enema. If they had a decent economy and honest business practices, these people wouldn't want to come here so badly.
But Fox is such a GREAT GUY.
More xenophobia from that wingnut media outlet, Time.
Where's Zachary Taylor and Robert E. Lee when you really need them?
(We shoulda kept it when we had it.)
Care to explain yourself?
link to the time poll please
Not Taylor & Lee but Scott & Lee. Sorry.
Yep, time to pull an 1836 on Mexico...
Presidente Boosh: Is this a 'Country' or is it a 'Market'?
Only the elites will be surprised by these numbers. Anyone with a brain and an understanding of polling could read the handwriting on the wall concerning the President's Plan long ago. The believers in the plan have the same "deer in the headlights" look every time they see a poll that shows just how wrong they are concerning what the American people think. The Meirs debacle times 10!
A strong stance against illegal immigration might just save the GOP this fall. It should be apparent that, even with a steady media drumbeat sympathizing with the poor, downtrodden illegals, the public staunchly rejects open borders. That strikes me as a solid platform from which to launch a conservative campaign.
I was talking Illegals with the Latin Americanist in our department. He told me that Fox was actually as good as we are going to see for a long time..as depressing as that sounds. Mexico will probably elect a full bore socialist to the next 6 year presidency.
We had a long depressing talk over drinks and dinner. It was my friends learned opinion that Mexico is simply a failed nation state running on fumes, corruption and cronyism until the inevitable collapse.
It used to be a source for cheap labor/products for North Americans. Now that role is being played by Asia. The northern tier of Mexico is rapidly depopulating, reconstructing itself north of the border in California, Texas, et. al.
The center is maintaining a precarious hold via bribes and outright thuggery, while the south is a just bad weekend away from outright civil war.
If you think the human tsunami we have today is bad, wait 10-15 years, when the whole friggin house of cards collapses.....
In other words-we are so screwed...
I'm wondering if a word other than "immigration" should be used.
Immigration has many laws and processes, so what's happening cannot be immigration.
Maybe we should use the word "migration" or "invasion."
How about "colonization?"
