Members of Congress are used to being attacked by their political opposition, but being attacked by anti-aircraft missiles is another matter entirely.
In January, a six-member delegation of the House Armed Services Committee, led by Rob Simmons, R-Conn., came under missile attack as they traveled "lights out" on a military plane from Baghdad to Kuwait, according to three members of that delegation.
Reps. Jeb Bradley, R-N.H., John Spratt, D-S.C., and Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawaii, confirmed the incident to The Chronicle.
Sources familiar with the Defense Department investigation into the attack said the missile used in the attack on the C-130 carrying the delegation was an SA-18, considered the most sophisticated of Russian shoulder-fired missiles, or MANPADS (man-portable air defense systems).
Missile avoided
According to those same sources, the missile was deflected by the plane's countermeasures -- based on technology Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and other lawmakers have been seeking for commercial airliners.

(((Ping)))
Neil Abercrombie, huh.......Shucks!
Thanks...
You want the guy dead just because you disagree with him politically? You, sir, are an ass.
It takes 4 months for this news to see the light of day, but anything else that would further the cause of the left is "leaked" at light speed.
I am suprised that the Dems didnt use this as fodder for their Iraq civil war/ America is loosing mantra.
Thanks for posting.
Rob Simmons, R-Conn., is one of our heroes (as opposed to almost every other CT politician) and it would have been a real loss for all conservatives and national security if he weren't doing the job he is.
Don't pass up any speech by him if he comes around.

Dah, This happens in a war zone every day.
So, a Soviet version of the US Stinger was spoofed by flares, which did exactly what they're supposed to do.
What's the big deal?
Flare packages on the fuselage and/or wings of Military Aircraft (Even "Trash Haulers") have been Standard Equipment for years.
The flares eject in sequence. The interior of the aircraft warms up. The missile follows the flares and explodes away from the aircraft.
Jack.
FYI... PING...
Remember the Civil War?
Boxer/libs wanting to put these on all commercial aircraft is my problem.
"Dah, This happens in a war zone every day."
Yup the guys and gals that volunteered get shot at everyday.
I don't care more for these elected ones any more than the service members but... if this attack had been successfull it would have be great PR for the enemy.
Oh, boy, I'm popping a bag of popcorn right now. This is gonna get good.
I think when their own personal safety is involved, they play by the rules. I suspect they kept this hushed up while it was still under investigation. Kudos to the air crew for dodging a "bullet".
The Blue and the Gray, brother against brother, states rights and preserving the Union, yada, yada, yada?
What's your point?
Thank you.
I suspect you are right. Too bad they dont realize that all of our collective personal safety is on the line while they play their politics.
