I live in NM and have lived in AZ, the Tucson area. There are a bunch of construction workers in both areas that make much less that $50/hr. I betcha that they would pick lettuce in the same heat they lay bricks, pour concrete, erect framing in. One thing they do is start earlier in the morning before the worst of the heat.

Current law, as I understand it, is foreign diplomat workers brought in by a foreign country do not have kids automatically become citizens. It's a distinction made for diplomats. If a company, any child born in the US today automatically becomes a citizen. (I'm not sure if that's your question.)

Companies who transfer an employee to the US are allowd as far as I understand it, and that would be logical, but I would have to look it up. For example, my old boss was the Digital regional manager for Europe and he had no problems holding that job. The same would be true here. But, were he an American looking for work there it would be different and he could not take a Europen job. (Including the UK. If you have more or different information, let me know because I'd like to know.)

Stetsons were made with Chency in mind, weren't they? (In case you wonder, a Stetson is a brand of hat. Do they have them in England?)

I agree with you, and might make it harder were it my decision.

I'm just thinking this problem could be handled easier than it's presented to everyone. A little bit of common sense would go a long way to resolve this, but that's too much for our representatives and senators to understand.

I would be willing to bet we could take the most radical posters on our thread today, put them in a room, and pay them for their time, and we'd have a workable and equitalbe solution worked out in 24 hours. (Solution rogguy911, NOT the program!)

I was referring to your comment that workers should only be allowed to work if they wanted to become citizens I then queries how that would affect foreign companies who may want to put a CEO or senior management in from their own country.

Having just seen the Specter interview about the "leak"...he kept saying the "White House leaked"..

I want to know what he means about that??

Is he referring to the Plame thing?? It has NEVER been proven that Plame's name was "leaked" by anyone, let alone the White House...

And, poor, poor Specter, along with the rest of the Congress...the fact IS, the President does NOT owe him or the American public an explanation or "EXCUSE" which is what he is really saying, for every conversation and every decision he makes with/without Dick Cheney!!!!

I am SO SICK of them trying to BLAME President Bush for THEM not being the POTUS, which is what I put this story in the catagory of!!!

Please excuse my poor grammar...I am angry right now..and I don't care...LOL

You can buy stetsons in Britain or hats that look like Stetsons but I suspect that they are probably only worn by Americans living in Britain but yes I agree with you Stetsons do suit the VP.

Now back to the TV

Carter never was president. He just played the part for four years. Remember back.... Everyone was in agreement that the presidency was too big for one person, which was used to explain why he was failing.

It took Ronald Reagan to turn the misconception around so that people understood one good man could indeed do the job. Clinton only did anything because he had others doing the work for him while he was busy under the desk in the Oval Office with 'more important' things.

I guanantee you. IF a Democrat wins in November 2008, the first things we'll hear is "it's worse than I thought" and "this can't be done!" The first reaction will be OHMYGODIHAVETORAISETAXESTOPAYFORITALL!!!

You know...everytime I hear Kerry, or anyone else, complain about the tragedy of the Iraqis that have died, or even the collateral deaths to women and children because of the US invasion of Iraq...

I have to wonder how these same people think the war would have been "better" or more "humane", if it had been done by the people of Iraq doing this on their own....like we are trying to talk the people of Iran to do in their country.

Do they not think there would have been a lot of Iraqis dying, or women and children being killed, inadvertantly or purposely?? Do they not think that Saddam wouldn't have fought back, like he did after the 1st Iraq war???

What do they think will happen in Iran, if we are successful in trying to get the Iranian people to fight "their own fight"..and try to overthrow the people that are oppressing them??? Don't they know it will be a bloody, bloody war, like OUR AMERICAN REVOLUTION was...

and then years later, OUR CIVIL WAR....was???

I wish we had videos of the AMERICAN REVOLUTION, and the CIVIL WAR....so that the Kerry's and Murtha's of the US, could see what bloody wars Americans were willing to endure to make this country what it is today!

Good point, but I would think an exception. The comment was meant for what would be a guest worker legally but one who did not want to become a citizen.

I'm going to post a vanity thread soliciting Freepers to research and document the lies told by Kerry and the rest of the Vietname "peace" activists in the late 60s early 70s, along with a serious discussion of the REAL consequences of our pullout (read abandonment) of the people in that part of the world.

You game?

Total farm labor is about 1 million people. We have 12 million illegals. What are the other 10 million doing?

Dog, I believe that in my neck of the woods, a goodly portion of them are cooking and selling meth, along with other drugs, sitting in our prisons at taxpayer expense, and killing and maiming each other in gangs and using free medical resources that, again, are paid by taxpayers.

Your argument makes some sense, but you must factor the cost of medical care and law enforcement in also, along with the cost of educating citizens to speak spanish (so that the illegals won't have to learn english) in order that their children can be taught tax-free in our schools so that they can later get a college education tuition-free from our universities so that they can be brainwashed into good socialists(so they can vote democrat) while my children are unable to afford tuition.

In the border states, woe be to you that are involved in an auto accident with an illegal, because they probably won't carrying insurance and you will be stuck with the medical and repair costs, and the private medical insurance that most employed citizens have just keeps getting more and more expensive to pick up this slack.

I'm sure there are other examples that I can't think of of the top of my head.

I truly believe that if we can do away with some of these freebies to illegals, the savings will trickle down and perhaps we can afford that expensive lettuce with the money we save on school taxes, health insurance, auto insurance, etc.

I live in a rural area of NJ. The farms here have migrant workers living on the property. Of course, the weather here is nothing compared to the heat of Arizona.

I don't know how anyone can be outdoors in midday there.

This was an extraordinary thread, and it had a lot of give and take. Some of the best posts were on things we may not agree with much but made excellent points. Although I sat this one out not posting, I lurked and thoroughly enjoyed this Sunday's adventure. Severe Allergies were too much for me to dedicate to all day posting. I commend those freepers that do the job every week like troopers. I see there are a few new Sunday Talk Show thread Posters with great insight. They must have been lurking and learning. Fantastic.....
