Am now reading the posts from the end up to the middle where I quit.

You are right. Many folks have had illegals working for them in one way or another for a variety of reasons. Myself included, altho years ago when it didn't seem an issue.

We have had contractors here who had have the crew not speaking a word of english. I presumed they were illegal.

We live in an area where finding any services at all is an adventure in extortion or a myriad of no shows. Too far to drive, sorry. etc. etc.

For me I'd say first enforce the laws on the books. Second, I support somehow taking this out of the hands of legislators who are using it as a political weapon and not a problem that needs to be dealt with.

Congress should set the goals or parameters and then get the heck out of the way and let the people responsible to enforce it to do their jobs.

There is no valid reason I can think of why a LEGAL alien coming to this country has to go through the artificial hoops that are there now. It takes too long and the paperwork is too overwhelming. For example, taking five or six years to become legal for a married spouse seems wrong to me.  Enforcing employer hiring practices should be done, and make it an even playing field for every company in an industry.

It's not just one solution or problem that has to be addressed either.  There are many things affected by whateve is done and each has to be looked at.  Frankly, unintended consequences due to governmant actons gets old.  I'm not a fan of so much congressional tampering and wish they would back off and let the executive branch do its job.

First of all, the same people that are doing this, were in charge of the protests when kids left school, and actually barged into Dallas City Hall...damaging property, while waving Mexican Flags..and screaming VIVA MEJICO!!!

And that really hurt their cause. Really really badly. I do not think they could of made a worse PR move. Maybe not via the Pols but it definitely hurts them with the voters. I do not think they know just how badly yet.

" I had not realised that the majority of health insurance in the US is paid via your employer. I had assumed that it was the same as the UK where some companies offer it as a perk but the majority of people that decide to take it out do it themselves and shop around for the best deal."

I didn't think people in the UK needed health insurance. I thought the NHS covered everyone. Is the NHS that bad? All we hear in the USA is how bad it is, long lines, etc.

Of course, the American doctors wouldn't want a National Health system in this country.

What to do with Mayors who insist that their city is a free zone for illegals?

What to do with those Mayors who insist that no matter the infraction there is to be no questioning of the perpetrator's legal status?

_ By 2014, half the children in public schools will be Hispanic. Researchers say a sizable minority of those students will be English-language learners.

Sorry but "Sizable minority" and blaming the whole problem pie on them does not logically follow. They are merely the easiest scapegoat for a society spinning out of control do to a calculated "buy their votes" mentality. Significant structural tax reform. Switch national from income to consumption taxes etc, would do more to solve the problem then "immigration reform".

What Happened on the Sunday Morning Talk Shows

Sunday, April 9 – Iraqi Liberation Day

John Kerry went on MTP this morning and insisted on having the Dayton Accords. He wants to threaten to cut and run on May 15, but it is to be an empty threat because it will take months, but the Iraqis and their neighbors won't know this. He insisted that only 2% of the remaining enemy in Iraq are al Qaeda; the rest are Iraqis, and he evidently still has not grasped that Iraqis can be al Qaeda.

On the MTP immigration roundtable, Representative Gutierrez called for enforcement and compassion, Rep. Hayworth questioned the notion of "birthright citizenship," and Rep. Bonilla chided Texas Governor Rick Perry for being a Republican.

On TW, House Majority Leader John Boehner supported enforcement-only and blamed Tom DeLay for "casting a shadow" on everything he's trying to do.

On FNS, Representative Peter King insisted that the Senate bill does too offer amnesty despite the definition of the word. He also called the Catholic bishops liars for pointing out that the House bill criminalizes rendering assistance to illegals.

On FNS, Senator Arlen Specter said that the Democrats should have agreed to allow amendments to the Senate immigration bill because the amendments would have failed.

On TW, Joe Wilson went on the defensive, mumbling about yellow cake and sixteen words.

On FNS, Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad said that the Shi'ites were sending out three delegates to meet with the Kurds and the Sunnis about Ibrahim al Jaafari, and if that doesn't pan out, a new candidate will be put forward. He expects results in two or three days.

On FTN, Representative Xavier Becerra insisted that the "far right" had destroyed the Senate immigration bill. (It was blocked by the Democrats.) Representative Tom Tancredo made up a new definition for amnesty.

On LE, Ambassador Khalilzad seemed to tacitly allow that the outcome in Iraq was a test for the feasibility of neoconservatism. In the next segment, Tony Zinni continued his book tour, stating that the U.S. should have run Iraq completely until it was ready to move forward on its own, much like we did with Japan following WW II. He added that the Clinton plan for removing Saddam Hussein and occupying Iraq involved the use of more troops than did Rumsfeld's plan.

No Federal funds to those who do not follow federal rules. Absolutely insane that they think WE should pay for their local grandstanding. Tie money to the rules, they Mayors will fall all over themselves to obey. Big City Mayors are even more cash whores then most pols

One thing we cannot do is make laws or decisions based on street demonstrations.

Not for or against their positions.P>We make decisions based on facts not emotions or base feelings.

By right or wrong that gets us back to political philosophy and whether or not a nation can or should have borders. The areas for argument are limitless.

Without seeming to go overboard on the issue, I do agree a country can and should have borders where that countries citizens have a social contract with other citizens of that country. Or state for that matter. If the first duty of government is the security of its citizens, then there seems to be little room to argue in favor of allowing, permitting or encouraging illegals to enter at will. Whether it's a safety issue or an economic one, citizens should not be harmed by illegal immigration.
