Stunning facts about the proposed immigration bill

SENATOR SESSIONS ON SECURING AMERICA'S BORDERS ACT

Mr. President, I thank Senator Leahy, ranking member on the Judiciary Committee.

I have received just this afternoon in my office some disturbing news in the form of correspondence from the Congressional Budget Office. It suggests a number of areas where the amendment we are talking about here today, No. 3424, the immigration so-called compromise, violates our budget and the rules of the Senate.

Let me read from the correspondence we have received. This is something, as you know, Mr. President, as a member of the Judiciary Committee, that we never discussed at all. It is not a matter we spent any time at all discussing as we moved forward with legislation which ultimately cleared that committee and came to the floor — legislation which I thought was not good legislation and which I opposed, and so did the Senator from Texas, who just relinquished the Chair. We didn't discuss the financial impact of the legislation before us.

Stand Up For America !

"We have room for but one flag, the American flag...
We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...
And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Thanks to The Spotted Owl for the ping to this essay by a FReeper:

May Day, mayday!

(snip)

Now these illegal workers are planning to strike and conduct La Gran Marcha on May 1st, “May Day,” a longstanding focus for demonstrations by various “worker” (i.e.: socialist) groups, although most of the participants probably don’t know or care much about that. What these immigrants do know is that a variety of American businesses are going to suffer a bit, and the average American consumer is going to be suddenly running short on all kinds of things, like mulch, for example. And what is available will be more expensive. The idea is that the general discomfort level will be sufficient to make Americans acquiesce to their demands.

But how about this idea instead: Get used to it. Are we not Americans and, as such, undaunted by hardship? If we are truly a “nation of laws,” and we resolve as a people to preserve our distinct culture and way of life, there will be pain for all involved, because fixing this long-festering problem will be neither quick nor easy....

... And I’ll mow the lawn myself, thank you.

from Forbes:

"Today the world's third-richest man (known as "Slim"), worth $30 billion, is on the other side of the Verizon deal table. Verizon is selling its Latin American and Caribbean operations to two Slim-controlled Mexican phone companies"

Not Verizon USA.. but getting close.

# 1 ALABAMA VOICES: Immigration demonstrations mostly spurred opponents -In recent weeks, hundreds of thousands of Mexicans and other Hispanic immigrants staged demonstrations in several states protesting U. S. immigration policy. But when Hispanic school children raised an upside down American flag underneath a Mexican flag in Montebello, Calif., they may have inadvertently created a national symbol for our struggle with the issue of illegal immigration. An American flag hanging upside down is a distress signal.

# 2 INVASION USA -Mexican police kill man in illegals raid - Officer apparently mistook victim for Central American- Local residents said the victim, Robert Lugo, was a construction worker whose dark skin and work clothes likely made him appear to be an illegal immigrant. Witnesses said Lugo was shot at close range and was not running from police or trying to confront them.

# 3 Richmond CA council opposes immigration bill - The Richmond City Council approved a resolution opposing immigration bill HR 4437 and called for revised legislation that is "fair, just and humane for all immigrants."

What happened to Sam Brownback?!

# 4 Brownback disagrees with making illegal immigration a felony- Brownback has broken with some conservatives by endorsing a Senate proposal creating a path to citizenship for certain illegal immigrants. He calls it a matter of compassion and practicality. But he also said it's uncertain that Congress will agree on any immigration reform package in an election year.

Keep on eye out for tricky CEO's!

# 5 Amid Immigration Debate, Companies Push for More Specialty Work Visas - business leaders continue to speak out about what they say is a shortage of H-1B visas, which are used for temporary employment in "specialty" industries such as engineering and medicine. The U.S. currently issues 65,000 H-1B visas annually. During the dotcom boom, the numbers were temporarily raised, as a result of lobbying from high tech companies, climbing as high as 195,000 from 2001-2003. The visas require employers to pay fees and sponsor a specific candidate to fill a position that the company cannot reasonably fill with a U.S. citizen. The visas can be renewed for up to six years.Fitz said. “There are literally thousands of businesses that depend on H-1Bs

From the above article: Vijay Vallabhaneni, the founder and CEO of Webyoga, a software and consulting firm in Dayton, Ohio.Webyoga has 50 employees and half of them are H-1B visa holders. Jeff Chambers, vice president of human resources at SAS, a Cary, N.C.-based software firm“We cannot find the people with the skills we need to run our business.” Chambers said SAS has 5,000 employees and roughly 60 are on H-1B visas. But the company has positions that have stayed open for more than three years. “Try to find someone with a Ph.D. in operations research

April 19: Homeland Security launched a nationwide crackdown on employers of undocumented immigrants. And as NBC’s Pete Williams reports, the targets weren't just the workers.

# 6 Raids took place at several locations in upstate New York and in Biglerville, Pa.; Charlotte, N.C.; Cincinnati, Houston, Phoenix, Richmond, Va., and Westborough, Mass.- Hundreds nabbed in immigration raid -Executives, workers arrested in nationwide move against pallet maker

More call to get tough on illegals - Membership in organizations in Tennessee, Illinois, Oregon and other states is growing. The Minuteman Project that deploys volunteers along the border to help prevent illegal immigration is forming official chapters across the nation.

Illegals must go, residents insist Congressman Miller hearsfrom 150 at local meeting -Tension and anger peppered the comments of residents gathered Tuesday for a town hall meeting on immigration reform, where many said tougher laws are needed. U.S. Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Chumuckla, who organized the meeting, opposes laws that would benefit illegal immigrants. He found a mostly like-minded crowd of nearly 150, which included only a handful of immigrants. "Illegal aliens do not need to stay here or get amnesty," he said, drawing applause at the end of the meeting at the old Escambia County Courthouse. "They need to go home and apply for citizenship before they come in."

# 1 Business Pulse results: Tighter immigration restrictions needed- The Memphis business community overwhelmingly supports tighter restrictions on immigration laws, according to a Memphis Business Journal online survey. Proposed legislation that would dramatically reform existing immigration laws is a major issue, sparking rallies across the country. Emotions are running high as Congress considers proposals ranging from guest worker programs and Green Card policy to increasing visas and granting amnesty. Critics of more relaxed immigration laws cite security concerns.

# 2 SENATOR MCCAIN 'STRAIGHT TALKS' TO UNION ABOUT ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION- Senator John McCain, co-sponsor of the McCain/Kennedy immigration bill now being considered in the Senate, recently echoed the mantra the pro-ILLEGAL immigration advocates always use, that illegals are taking the jobs no one else wants. He should have picked his audience more carefully. His “Straight Talk Express” across the United States in recent weeks led him to Washington, D.C. to deliver an address to a union group. After telling the union members that immigrants are taking jobs no one else wants, he offered them $50 an hour to pick lettuce in Arizona for a summer, intimating that he thought they couldn’t do it. Several offers came from the members to take him up on that offer, but the senator was long gone before anyone could submit an application. Besides being a slap at the American worker class, it was an elitist viewpoint of what the average worker actually earns per hour in today’s marketplace.

# 3 Crossing the border - 'easy to do. Nothing to it'- Tom and Margie Corcoran of Braintree recently investigated first hand the porous nature of the US and Mexican border. The current volume of illegal aliens entering into the country prompted the trip to see just how easy it is to cross from one nation to the other. This was not exactly a random trip as this is the tenth time the family has traveled a great distance with a unique purpose.

# 4 The Immigrants' Dilemma: To Boycott or Not to Boycott? A split is growing over how militant the upcoming "Day Without Immigrants" should be

# 5 Divisions emerge over May 1 immigration work and school boycott

# 6 Legal immigrants pay high price to stay - With all of the spotlight shining on the issue of illegal immigrants and their belief that they deserve to receive citizenship — though they knowingly entered the country illegally — why is there very little discussion of how this affects legal immigrants and the problems they face?

# 7 Venezuela, Cuba likely to get U.N. spots - Despite Bush administration efforts to stop Venezuela and Cuba from joining key U.N. councils, the two nations' chances are good.

Just the right graphic for every occasion! *sigh*

The costs outweigh the benefits of allowing this to go on.

By hook or by crook, I predict that the Senate will include an AgJobs provision in whatever bill they come up with.

There is no way they will turn their backs on that lobby.

MALDEF showed their muscle 12 years ago, when Californians passed Proposition 187 to deny public benefits to illegals and mandate local LE to report illegals, and they took it to court where it was defeated.
