Congress Nears Deal on Illegal Immigrants (breaking on cable networks)
AP/Yahoo News ^ | 4-6-06 | DAVID ESPO

WASHINGTON - In a last stab at compromise, Senate Republicans and Democrats reported progress Thursday toward agreement on legislation opening the way to legal status and eventual citizenship for many of the 11 million immigrants now in the U.S. illegally.

"There's been tremendous progress overnight," said Sen. Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record) of Nevada, the Democratic leader, while Majority Leader Bill Frist also expressed optimism that a long-sought compromise might be at hand.

There was no immediate reaction from President Bush, who has made immigration legislation a key priority.

The developments occurred after Frist unveiled a new bill late Wednesday night on the subject as the Senate headed into a test vote on the most sweeping immigration bill in two decades.

In general, the legislation would provide for enhanced border security, regulate the flow of future immigrants into the United States and settle the legal fate of the estimated 11 million men, women and children already in the country.

It was the fate of the illegal immigrant population that proved hardest to legislate, and it has left the Senate on the verge of gridlock for days.

(snip)

Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., as well as other key senators met before the vote to review terms of a proposed compromise.

In general, it would require illegal immigrants who have been in the United States between two years and five years to return to their home country briefly, then re-enter as temporary workers. They could then begin a process of seeking citizenship.

Illegal immigrants here longer than five years would not be required to return home; those in the country less than two years would be required to leave without assurances of returning, and take their place in line with others seeking entry papers.

I believe that the bill contemplated by the Senate includes your suggestions.

People that are advocating changing laws ex-post facto, to

Your whole post is wrong.
They are already breaking the law, there is no ex post facto involved, and the law as to making an action a felony is done every single day. - That is how laws are made.

You are simply hype and dogma signifying nothing.

These people are criminals. What does the word "illegal" mean?

I phoned my two senators this morning. Senator Talent's office said the he will not vote for any bill containing amnesty. Senator Bond's office did not know what the bills would do to people who remain illegal.

"how would you deport 20 million people"

Say loud and clear, ALL ILLEGAL ALIENS WILL BE ARRESTED, then watch most of them go the way they came. Seriously, no doubt it is a big job, but it can be done. Do we say, that their are just too many crimes being committed in America so we might as well give up on law enforcement.. let all the criminals go?? Or, there are just too many terrorists in the world, its impossible to stop so let them win?

Because 11 million or more Mexicans were brazen enough to break our laws we just cave in because we can't handle it? What message are we giving to the rest of the world when we won't enforce our present laws because 'it's too hard, too big of a job'. I wonder what the Iraqi's would think..how are we suppose to win there if we can't manage at home?

Yeah.

This is all about the FTAA, CAFTA, NAFTA, etc.

Has anyone heard anything about the Law of the Sea Treaty lately?

Has this administration and the Senate given the Seven Seas to the United Nations yet?

Our war is now with our own party.

Brilliant. The dissolution of the GOP will definitely cause the Democrats heavy losses in our American TWO PARTY system. "Hold muh beer while I cut my nose off to spite my face".

THEN I'LL GET HILLARY! I prefer my enemy to the front, not the rear. 2004 is the absolute last election I will vote to stop a democrat. Immigration reformers should take a page from the pro-lifers: they don't care if a dem gets into office, you either vote pro-life or they don't support you. That means almost all GOPers are pro-life, because they can't win without the pro-lifers. Yes, the GOP will lose some elections. So what? If the only leverage you have over them is the ability to cost them elective office, then that's what you use. My days of being blackmailed by Rove et all are over.

Oh, and it's going to hit 15 million so fast your head will spin. This is unfathomable on so many levels. Now, the campaign will be on to spend OUR money to buy THEIR (the amnestied Illegal Aliens) votes!

"Were you ashamed to be a Republican when President Reagan approved a flat out amnesty program in 1986?"

You bet I was! I think that RR's amnesty was the only bad mark on an otherwise perfect administration. You can count me out voting for RINO's in the next election if this passes.

This means outrageous bureaucratic red tape. What if all illegals say they have been here for more than 5 years. I mean they are all "undocumented". Who's to make the final determination of how long they have been here.

Anyone for a new party this November?

The dissolution of the GOP will definitely cause the Democrats heavy losses in our American TWO PARTY system.

You're missing some logic there. In a 2 party system, the dissolution of one party means....a new one will emerge. Either the GOP will turn back to being conservative or a truly conservative 3rd party will gain strength. Hopefully by 2008, because it looks like the GOP is kissing their a$$es goodbye for 2006.

Yes, they can prove documentation is fake. But will they? See, that is where the divergence is. We're able to catch illegal entrants, but pressure is placed on them to be released or look the other way. I have no reason to believe the sincerity of Washington to let the INS do its job with implementation of this new bill. IMO, it's nothing but gloss to satisfy people upset..but behind scenes they'll continue to 'encourage' people do not look too closely at these documents.

I'd love to be wrong, but they haven't earned trust. That is why many people wanted border enforcement first, myself included. To let them prove their sincerity. THEN, perhaps, measures for those already in country could be debated with some leniacy.

Oh, good lord, no I haven't said that at all.

I've been alive way to long not to know that there are huge difference between the two.

What I said is that you will not hurt them, period.

Win or lose, they keep playing, it is just that the difference is with one you get Ginsberg and with the other you get Roberts.

And that is where the real future of the country is ironed out.

Illegals who are contributing to our economy, working menial labor and are law abiding may deserve amnesty. To want to deport all 20 million is unpractical and fanatical.

You obviously drank the Kool-aid that La Raza, Worker's World Party, and the Revolutionary Communist Party (the people actually behind the latest massive pro-ILLEGAL immigration demonstrations) have been handing out. I'm sorry, but illegal immigration is NOT a victimless crime. I live on the border and I've seen my friends and neighbors killed, injured, robbed, and otherwise damaged by the illegals streaming through my county. I have friends who have lost jobs, who have relatives die on a gurney in an emergency room, etc. because of the illegals. I've seen our trauma and maternity wards close because of the illegals. I've seen our schools overcrowded and school costs go up because of the illegals. I've seen our protected areas of the desert absolutely trashed by illegals. I've been chased anad threatened with death by human traffickers waiting to pick up their load of illegals.

Amnesty my ass! Pardons my ass! Hell, Congress and President Bush are trying to ram through something that no only will provide amnesty but will provide rewards. That is absolutely intolerable! So take your "unpractical and fanatical" horse shit and shove it. We're being invaded. Over 20 million are already here. Over the past week and half literally millions have taken to the street, waved flags of the foreign nation to wich they give their allegiance, and you want to tell me to just bend over and take it. Hell no! And then you try to pretend that the criminal invaders are somehow noble, contributing to our economy and are - even most preposterous - "law abiding" and "may deserve amnesty"!!? No freakin' way! I want every last one of them OUT, the border secured, and then and only then will we start to let some of them back in on OUR terms and only when it is proven to benefit US.

So, choose now. Either you're on America's side or your on the side of the ILLEGAL rabble in the streets waving the flags of the foreign nations to which they give their loyalty. Whose side are you on!?
