Congress Nears Deal on Illegal Immigrants (breaking on cable networks)
AP/Yahoo News ^ | 4-6-06 | DAVID ESPO

WASHINGTON - In a last stab at compromise, Senate Republicans and Democrats reported progress Thursday toward agreement on legislation opening the way to legal status and eventual citizenship for many of the 11 million immigrants now in the U.S. illegally.

"There's been tremendous progress overnight," said Sen. Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record) of Nevada, the Democratic leader, while Majority Leader Bill Frist also expressed optimism that a long-sought compromise might be at hand.

There was no immediate reaction from President Bush, who has made immigration legislation a key priority.

The developments occurred after Frist unveiled a new bill late Wednesday night on the subject as the Senate headed into a test vote on the most sweeping immigration bill in two decades.

In general, the legislation would provide for enhanced border security, regulate the flow of future immigrants into the United States and settle the legal fate of the estimated 11 million men, women and children already in the country.

It was the fate of the illegal immigrant population that proved hardest to legislate, and it has left the Senate on the verge of gridlock for days.

(snip)

Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., as well as other key senators met before the vote to review terms of a proposed compromise.

In general, it would require illegal immigrants who have been in the United States between two years and five years to return to their home country briefly, then re-enter as temporary workers. They could then begin a process of seeking citizenship.

Illegal immigrants here longer than five years would not be required to return home; those in the country less than two years would be required to leave without assurances of returning, and take their place in line with others seeking entry papers.

The leftists are jamming a national ID down our throats, and you and Lou Dobbs are on board. I am not worried, because I have a well-worn valid passport. Enjoy the intrusion into everyones personal life IF you get your way, Comrade.

What utter nonsense. - debating you is like talking to the wall.

A waste of breath.

"We could provide you with copious data demonstrating the deleterious impact untrammeled immigration has on our economy and our society." I have seen at least one post stating that this guy is against ALL immigration.

How does one go about determining how often illegals have abortions?

They used to say that about blacks too but stats say otherwise now.

Many of FR's biggest Open Borders are themselves minorites or hire them or are married to them. Plain and simple.

No one ever brings that up that is the case. What objectivity eh? It's racist for me to want to preserve my culture but not for them to overwhelm it with their's ?

Oddly, last nite...Tony Blankley had some WSJ polls about how out of sync Bush and the RINOs are with about 75% of Americans and a big chunk of their own base.

The poll also showed that many legal aliens oppose this crap and even 50% of legal Hispanics....old time Mexicans and Cubans I assume.

What a damned mess. Perhaps the worst legislation I've ever seen.

Get ready to take in the world and kiss our culture goodbye.

This dung passes and it's over. We will have to absorb a huge chunk of the world's poverty and most will vote Dem...make no mistake.

I didn't say "trade" specifically, but it could get to taht - I was thinking first off the $20 billion sent back to Mexico every year - you think they will be happy losing that money?

"Here are a dozen posters "

A whole DOZEN! On a site with at least 50,000 viewers? And none of the posters regulars? And most of the posters on the thread FOR legal immigration! On a thread dedicated to bringing out those who oppose ALL immigration, and all you can muster is a DOZEN!

Man, you are just a freaking prevaricator. That barely reaches the level of statistical noise! Thousands of people are laughing at you!

Nope, $2 billion was the cost to build the 700 mile wall, which takes in all of the areas of concern.

"$80 billion" was Jeff's figure - not mine - you will have to ask him where he got it.

I take it that is not an apology then? I only had to find ONE to disprove you and nicmarlo's statements, e.g. "I've been following the immigration threads for quite awhile; never have I seen anyone post they are against LEGAL immigration."

Funny, but it appears that Do not specifically stated "untrammeled immigration" or "mass immigration" or 20 million influx of immigrants at one time having a disastrous effect, economically. The U.S. govt. has in place quotas to prevent a severe influx of immigration because that influx can and will cause an imbalance on our economy, local government, institutions of education, much as we are experiencing with the influx of illegals currently within our society.

not that I'm one of them, but so what?

If their opinion should ever prevail, and it won't until after the war, what say you?

Real Americans have the right to vote any way that they please. That is why we have so many democrats and RHINOs.

Let me anticipate: What is a 'real' American?

If you don't know, then I'm not going to bother with you.

I was just using the figures that have cited in other threads about the Isreali wall. Their wall is also much more sophisticated than what we would need.

At any cost it would be a bargain.

[ agree with you on the issue of illegal immigration, but I strongly feel that the American public just doesn't have the political will for a fence.

The cost isn't a problem, but it would take years to build and funding would eventually be stopped.

I believe that the cutting off of non-emergency social services to illegals including education should be the first step as it has the most bang for the buck.

Couple this will prison time for employers that use illegal labor and most would self deport.]

I'm fine with your proposal, just make the fence a long term part. In reality, this isn't going to be solved overnight. There probably will be a guest worker program - which is doomed to fail a horrible death because no illegals will sign up for it. So, I think you just do as much as you can without throwing out the baby in the bath water.

In other words, make the guest worker provision impossible to comply with (I can't think of one they would comply with) and in exchange get in return employer sanctions and a start on the wall. Once guest worker dies it's inevitable death, you go gung ho on what is needed.

Okay...within the first 18 posts, I saw two.

Wow.

That really justifies your asking Fast Coyote if his opinion, on this thread of thousands of posts, represents one of those two posters on the other thread.

All this 'no amnesty under any circumstances' stuff is just childish foot stamping.

Obviously truth, justice, and the American way mean little to you. You would give amnesty to illegals, and they can become citizens in 11 years. However, my wife is a citizen, and her daughter is in the First Family Preference category, and it will take 13 to 15 years from the filing for her to become a citizen. Adult brothers and sisters of citizens will take up to 28 years. Excuse me, but who is the man behind the curtain telling us illegals are going to have to get at the back of the line? I have had it with the liars, and those who make their money on the back of illegals. There will be a price to pay on judgment day for this evil.
