WASHINGTON - In a last stab at compromise, Senate Republicans and Democrats reported progress Thursday toward agreement on legislation opening the way to legal status and eventual citizenship for many of the 11 million immigrants now in the U.S. illegally.
"There's been tremendous progress overnight," said Sen. Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record) of Nevada, the Democratic leader, while Majority Leader Bill Frist also expressed optimism that a long-sought compromise might be at hand.
There was no immediate reaction from President Bush, who has made immigration legislation a key priority.
The developments occurred after Frist unveiled a new bill late Wednesday night on the subject as the Senate headed into a test vote on the most sweeping immigration bill in two decades.
In general, the legislation would provide for enhanced border security, regulate the flow of future immigrants into the United States and settle the legal fate of the estimated 11 million men, women and children already in the country.
It was the fate of the illegal immigrant population that proved hardest to legislate, and it has left the Senate on the verge of gridlock for days.

Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., as well as other key senators met before the vote to review terms of a proposed compromise.
In general, it would require illegal immigrants who have been in the United States between two years and five years to return to their home country briefly, then re-enter as temporary workers. They could then begin a process of seeking citizenship.
Illegal immigrants here longer than five years would not be required to return home; those in the country less than two years would be required to leave without assurances of returning, and take their place in line with others seeking entry papers.

No. Because when they were ticketed, the previous law was in effect.
There. I've answered your questions. Now you answer mine.
I am NOT advocating the following...but I AM predicting it.
Because of the frustration of the American people...because of the sell-out by those in Washington D.C......violent acts will start happening against illegal(and maybe legal ones too) immigrants.
AGAIN...I am NOT advocating violence.....but it's a comin'.(based upon history)
All it would take to prevent this ..is for the law (as it is now written)to be upheld.
Sad...that the members of Congress would rather take the cowards way out.

Do you know how many AmerAsians are languishing in the Philippines or Indonesia, waiting to immigrate to America before they are deported back to Vietnam?
These are people that are, to all intents and purposes, Americans, and yet they have no rights, whereas someone who comes over from Tijuana, pops out a kid-by exploiting public services we pay for-is automatically on the fast-track to American citizenship.
Exactly!
Don't compare the slaves with the criminal Mexicans and assorted South Americans illegals/criminals who come here by choice and refuse to assimilate. I am sure you have heard of Reconquista. Question is (based on your posting history) - do you suport the Reconquista as well? I think I know the answer but I just want to be sure.
Unfortunately, IMO, Washington isn't interested in securing the border. Only convincing the public they are with superficial means.
Seems we felt the same about Dubai then. But what truly outraged me was how the UAE was treated by our representatives.
But, we were the minority. Which is the point. Disagreements I can deal with, but rhetoric unsubstantiated I cannot. Except I know better than to believe that will ever change. It's largely why I have avoided immigration threads to begin with, but now that it is the focal issue I've no choice.
Sure - what were your questions?
Drive through East LA, Boyle Heights, parts of Long Beach, etc. Many of the residents/squatters have no intention of learning English.
I know, I am so angry at all this. The republicans are no better than the democrats. All they think about is reelection. I want the GOP to keep control of both Congress and the White House, but I am ready for a complete change of every seat. Replace them with new conservative Republicans that have the spine to fight for us.

Doubling the size of the Border patrol and BILLIONS of dollars for Homeland Security since 9/11 are "superficial means"?! Whew.

"Have I got it right? Thank God for the conservatives in the House."
Yes and Amen.
This is not a comprimise on how to fix a broken system.
This is amnesty, and it will worsen the problem, not make it better.
How will this impact our civilization and culture ?
A valid question -- and easy enought to answer.
If you want to know what this will do to our country tomorrow, take a look at Mexico today.
Goodbye, America.
¡Hola Amexica!
Well, your "hunch" is wrong - as I stated, if your side seeks another "Civil War", I will be on the side of PRESERVING THE UNION.
clawrence3 appears to be under the misconception that sheer determination on his part can take the place of having any sort of factual or logical legs to stand on.
Wishful thinking, that.
My sister is LAPD in South Central, so I think I know what is out there - I completely agree that criminals / those who don't want to be citizens should be imprisoned / deported - does that make you happy?
