It puts Republican politicians, especially those seeking the 2008 presidential nomination, squarely on the spot.

As well it should.

I like the plan Haley Barbour endorses, exceptrions for the life of the mother, Incest or Rape

Jackson, MS (LifeNews.com) -- Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, a Republican, says he will sign a measure that bans virtually all abortions in the state should it make its way through the legislature and reach his desk. A state House committee approved the ban on a wide margin.

The measure would prohibit all abortions except in very rare cases when the life of the mother is in jeopardy. It does not allow exceptions for abortions in cases of rape or incest -- something Barbour says he favors.

"It hasn't gotten to my desk yet. When one gets there, we'll find out, and I suspect I'll sign it," Barbour told the Associated Press.

"But I would certainly rather it come to my desk with an exception for rape and incest. I think that's consistent with the opinion of the vast majority of Mississippians and Americans," he added.

Nobody in the GOP leadership is willing to talk about anything that matters due to the fear of alienating some voters. When you only win by about 3%, I guess you can get that way.

They ARE willing to talk about some really "critical" stuff though, like steroids in pro baseball, whether to commend the capitol police for not doing McKinney like the first step in chitlin preparation....

Meanwhile, the IRS still breathes, the tax cuts are still temporary, the southern border is wide open and spending is running out of control.

I hope the RINOs in charge of the GOP will be happy with picking up a few new voters while about half of the base stays home the next election out of pure disgust. It's not going to be pretty.

He said, "It makes a lot of them nervous. It's one thing to just talk about banning abortion -- and they do that all the time, because it's a great way to fire up the base and raise money. But it's another thing to actually ban abortion nationwide

I hate to point out the obvious; but the South Dakota law would ban abortion only in South Dakota--we still have some vestige of a federal system.

No way this law gets upheld. The supreme court still has five pro-abortion members, even assuming that Alito and Roberts would vote to reverse Roe. Count 'em.

Pro-life bump. We need to hold their feet to the fire on this.

While I question the timing of the South Dakota vote (I only count 4 votes, at most, to overturn Roe), I fully uspport what they are trying to do. Hopefully, the ambitious national Republicans won't try to scuttle it.

The time has come to start demandign protection for teh unborn.

BTW, how is it that the killing of the yet-unborn Conor Peterson by his father was murder, but if his mother had chosen to do it at the same point, it woudl be permitted legally? Does that make any sense?

The AP doesn't explain why, if abortion is supposedly so radioactive an issue for Republicans, the Democrats are running a pro-life candidate in Pennsylvania. That's hundreds of miles from South Dakota. You would think every one would agree in general, abortion is a bad thing, and the less we have of the procedure, the better off the country will be. This South Dakota law doesn't only put Republicans on the spot; it puts Democrats on the spot as well. But we'll never hear the MSM run a story on how the Democrats' abortion on demand extremism has lost them ground with voters all over the clountry. Again, no media bias here!

She's not for limiting abortion. It's a ruse.

IMO no pro-abortion candidate, Hillary or any other who takes big bucks from NARAL and Emily's List can ever be elected to National office in the US.

Abortion is my most important personal issue. I want this abolished for all reasons. My most important American issue is the War on Terror. If a person is for both of those I would vote for that person. The rest is crap in my opinion. Yes tax cuts are nice, but that is not going to affect American as much as War on Terror and Abortion.

Dick Polman had worked for the Philly Inquirer -- I think he left recently -- and always struck me as being a strong propagandist for the Dems.

I'd discount everything he says. Concerning abortion I don't know of any Pub politician seeking the national spotlight boasting about being "pro choice". Note that Rudy, himself, has been quiet on the matter.

Since we just won two big battles on the Supreme Court it may be smart to be quiet about it. Frankly, rather than a frontal assault on Roe right now I'd rather see a massive attempt to defund Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers-- restricting Fed money to states that fund it would be an interesting thing to try.

And rather than using abortion to overturn Roe, it might be smarter to use something else -- someone claiming the right to sell his kidney or share dirty needles or that case where that idiot was claiming a man has a right to an abortion.

But, lately, hardly anybody in the GOP camp seems eager to address the historic event that transpired this month out on the high plains and now threatens to roll eastward, to the U.S. Supreme Court. It is, of course, abortion

Cowards to the truth.

It is astonishing we've been discussing this for 33 years and most still don't even know what an abortion is - hence the cavalier attitude about the rape exception.

SHOW an abortion, with no narration or censorship, on national television. THEN we will be ready, as a nation, to discuss this.

No I think this is wishful thinking.

Abortion is consistently a base winner.

I think the democrats are sowing these delusional sees because they are in terror abortion will be returned to the states.

The fear a death or resignation.

This is a base winner issue.
