Remembering The Veterans Of WWI
April 6th, 1917 The United States Entered WWI
World War I, also known as the First World War, and (before 1939) the Great War, the War of the Nations, and the War to End All Wars, was a world conflict lasting from August 1914 to the final Armistice on November 11, 1918. The Allied Powers (led by Britain, France (and Russia until 1917), and, after 1917, the United States) defeated the Central Powers (led by the German Empire, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire). The war caused the collapse of four empires and a radical change in the map of Europe. Before 1917 the Allied powers are sometimes referred to as the Triple Entente, and the Central Powers are sometimes referred to as the Triple Alliance.
President Wilson asks Congress for a declaration of war with Imperial Germany.

In Flanders Fields John McCrae In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

Happy Army Day
6 April 2006
What a great thread to honor our nation's heroes! The technological advancements made in recent decades make the battlefield conditions of WWI look so primitive. The experiences of every one of these fine soldiers would probably raise the hair of today's fighting force. What an honor to have such men and women in our nation's heritage.
