Senate's Immigration Bill Is Republican Politicians' Worst Nightmare
Human Events Online ^ | April 4, 2006 | Robert Novak

The Senate is expected this week to pass a guest-worker program along with border enforcement provisions. The combination of these two issues into one bill is guaranteed to maximize political damage to Republicans. The bill’s basic structure will likely maintain the McCain-Kennedy amnesty provisions, with some small modifications. It is less clear what border enforcement provisions it will ultimately contain. Least clear of all is its future in a House-Senate conference, where it could even die. The House-passed version includes no amnesty or guest-worker provision.

Because President Bush has insisted on a “comprehensive” bill that includes both provisions, Republicans will lose this debate no matter what happens. If they fail to pass a bill because of disagreements over the amnesty provision, it will be extremely embarrassing. If they pass a bill that is too lax, they will anger a significant portion of their base. It is highly unlikely that they will pass an enforcement-only bill and take up a separate amnesty bill.

McKinney Trumps National Security Plan

A Democratic “National Security Strategy” was unveiled last week, but the consensus is that the cliché-filled document fell flat. Devoid of creative thinking, it proposes to do almost exactly what the current administration is doing, with a few shots at Bush for “manipulating” intelligence to start the Iraq War.

Not only did it fall flat as a news story, but it was easily superseded as the major story of the day because of one Democratic member’s creation of a major distraction. Democrats are not happy that by assaulting a Capitol Police officer, Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-Ga.) took the news spotlight. With her action and then her refusal to simply apologize and move on, McKinney at least threw the Democrats off-message. Even if the story itself is known and understood only by political junkies and insiders, it prevented constructive news coverage they could have used.

Republican Rep. Patrick McHenry (N.C.) is trying to extend the story’s shelf-life with a resolution commending the Capitol Police.

There was one of the best letters to the editor in our local paper today that I've ever seen.

The writer had facts and figures about how much illegal immigration costs us in terms of social services given freely to the illegals and well as the number of illegals on death row and how much it costs to keep them.

He then absolutely disintegrated the argument that if illegals are kept out of the country, produce costs, etc., will rise. He admitted they'll rise, but not more than what it's already costing the taxpayer to cover social services for the illegals.

The point wasn't to brag about nothing getting done but if the Rats block any bill the local campaigns will run on that.

Why don't the GOP senate run on a tough enforcement bill?

Where is that tough enforcement bill from the GOP?
They have this amesity bill that won't pass and thats a good thing. But where is the Majoriy's Tough Enforcement Bill?

If you think the GOP senators will be able to run against the demorats with the defeat of this bill, you will be suprised in November.

What many conservatives will remember is the GOP MAJORITY's inability to do anything, especially a tough enforcement bill.

"Why don't the GOP senate run on a tough enforcement bill?"

It takes 60 to get anything through and too many RINOs that side with Rats on every issue. Just a get tough bill has a chance of getting 45 votes, tops. Do I agree with the way the system has been going? No, but unless there's 60 ready to get really tough it ain't goin to happen and losing seats in the Senate to Rats won't get anyone any closer.

How do you know it won't pass?

How many freepers here said the same thing about Alito's nomination?
I recall lots of freepers saying we could not put a "tested conservative through"
and that we had to support Miers...that was the best we could do in the senate.

Guess what... Alito got through.

I can now determine your approach to this. Make sure the GOP maintains power at any cost and excuse their inability to govern as a majority. Some of us view
issues more important than party. I will not give my vote away enbloc, just as the black community gives their vote enbloc to the democrats. If that costs us
majority, so what? The GOP has not goverened as majority anyway. The GOP can do the same to the democrats as they are now doing to the GOP.

The Rats will still back amnesty, because this creates a new reliable voter base for the Democrats to cultivate.

I am not questioning your conservative commitment but I don't believe one can build a foundation without owning the land first. Even if the land contains scrub brush the first step is buy the land, clear the brush, pour the foundation. How do I know it won't pass? I do believe a bill will pass but it won't be with the exclusion of the guest worker program (amnesty), period. 45 Rats and at least 5 RINOs don't give the Conservatives the 60 needed.
While everyone talks about conservative principles they conveniently forget about political suicide. If a true conservative ran on a principle of complete elimination of Social Security for 100% private accounts, which is a base principle for conservatism, when the laughter stops the lynching will begin. The Conservative Movement is a process and not an overnight success.

But as I stated, she hasn't even been arrested yet and the trial will be months away.

She will never stand trial. If she is arrested, she will cop a plea and that will be that. Jail time. None. Only the partisans on both sides are even aware of this or know who she is. She is a distraction to the press so they can do us as much damage while they are dealing with her front and center. But she will never be big news unless the copy dies from his slap.

A political and national security 'lose-lose'.

Just lovely...

I know that you are not questioning my conservative values as I do not question yours. We disagree in methods. I have already mentioned Harriet Miers as an example of how many people here thought we could not do better. Let me give you another example.

Why doesn't the senate put a tough enforcement bill on the table?

I'll tell you why. What Senator is going to vote against a tough enforcement bill?
There would be some. But I am not so sure it would not pass the senate, like Alito did.
Even if it did not pass, we would then have on record. those senators who opposed it.

The only conclusion that can be made why a tough enforcement bill has not been put up is that the GOP and The Rats wish to protect big business, instead of our borders.
