Spanish-language media played key roles in the hot debate over immigration legislation
As the immigration debate heats up across the country, Spanish-language media and some of their key players are being both applauded and chastised for their roles in the process.
Last week, many people nationwide were surprised at the speed with which hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets in what seemed a coordinated effort to protest what they called punitive proposed House legislation. That legislation seeks stiffer penalties for people who are in the country illegally and for those helping them.
Protesters, including students who walked out of school, claimed partial victory as a Senate committee approved a bill without those provisions.
So how did these demonstrations get mobilized?
Organizers used Spanish-language media, including television, radio, newspapers and Web sites, to keep people informed about events and marches. They are continuing to do so as the debate winds through the Senate and as organizers in North Texas are planning a march Sunday in downtown Dallas.
Even while the war on terror and in Iraq have taken center stage in the mainstream news media during the last three years, immigration reform has remained a hot topic among the Spanish-language media and their audiences.
Across the country last week, Spanish-language newspapers, from large dailies to small weeklies, have written editorials on the apparent awakening of the "sleeping giant" and have called on Congress to craft a humane immigration bill. Television programs have replayed the mass demonstrations, and talk-show callers have debated the use of the Mexican flag in the protests.
Some of the Spanish-language media's most prominent names have found themselves in the forefront of the debate.

It's just a matter of semantics. I'm assuming that the flag was misused(gosh, don't wanna be a drama queen here)by citizens. That is insurrection, especially when coupled by waving another country's flag, and seditious words on posters. They aren't playing games here. They're serious. If you don't want to take it seriously, then that's your funeral.
Now if they aren't citizens, and in fact are not here legally, I'd call it an act of war. I would deal with it as such. Yeah, they're just a bunch of exuberant youths skipping school on a lark....from coast to coast. NOT!
Anyway, this thread is about "misguided"(my ass)clergy aiding and abetting illegals.
I think he fully knows what he's doing. He is no dummy. So far, his actions have not convinced me, or anyone I know who cares about The Church (or the country), otherwise.

I thought I had made it abundantly clear in reference to 'invasion'. Are you suggesting that the three cases you cite above are similar to what is currently occurring? That is, separation, immersion & assimilation. If so, then I would have to question your motivations and nature of your position.

Wonder what the reaction would be if our elitist religious Congress leaders and some clerics in mosques started demanding legal status of 12 million + Muslims????

There are priests who would step up, but their positions are unpopular, therefore tenous. Especially in Roger's little kingdom. Btw, he's been doing this kind of stuff for years, as well as a handful of other bishops. Maybe if every Catholic who is outraged, emailed, faxed, or wrote to the Vatican, and demanded that this behavior stop, we'd get some change.
I'm suggesting that the overwhelming number of Hispanic immigrants, by the third or fourth generation, will have assmilated, just as the Irish, Italians and Chinese have.
This is not an "invasion" so much as people taking advantage of an opportunity.

Go right ahead, but the American bishops' advocacy for immigrants is 20 years old, not something that just popped up via Mahoney. John Paul II certainly approved, and one can reasonably surmise that Benedict XVI does as well.

I don't think Cardinal Mahoney organized this. This has all the earmarks of a 'professional' job, along the lines of the demonstrations when the World Bank is in town. These were NOT spontaneous events. Some people's actions were spontaneous, like some of the marchers, but I wouldn't be surprised if we learned that this had been planned for months, it just happened to coalesce at just the right time.
Of course you don't have the common decency to ping those you mention in your post. Just like you don't have the common decency to capitalize Catholic.

Pope John PaulII was a wonderful human being, and a dedicated defender of human rights. I'm sure you remember that he was almost assassinated early on, and suffered health problems throughout his tenure as Pope. Don't play stupid with me. He didn't make half those proclamations by himself. Pope Benedict's job is to clean house, and get rid of the scandalous behavior/darn near heretical apostates out of the Church.
Mahoney's been at this for years. I grew up in the Los Angeles diocese. It's not a matter of any given set of years, what they're doing is sticking their noses in where it doesn't belong. The Church has no right to foment unrest, nor to aid and abet criminals.
It's like some sad schizophrenic's adaptation of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, except the villainy of the Jooooooos is now replaced by a scheming papist hiding behind every scene, pulling strings (oooooooh!).
Do you know what that means? Do you have any idea the historical context it came from? No cheating, now: I'm asking what you know, not what you can google. I think your knowledge of the 'relationship' between the Church and the State in Central and South America is nearly nil. Your ignorance on that matter destroys your credibility on this whole topic.
