In 1942, Arthur Rice suffered through the Bataan Death March, 65 miles of heat, dehydration and abuse that claimed the lives of many of his fellow U.S. soldiers. He then toughed out years of forced labor as a Japanese prisoner of war.
"My dad was such a survivor," said Jennyne Bilsky, 59, Rice's eldest child. "We always thought he had nine lives."
Rice, an Air Force master sergeant, died in his Austin home Sunday morning. He was 89.

"Rice, an Air Force master sergeant, died in his Austin home Sunday morning. "I dunno...
Pretty convenient excuse for not getting his 2005 taxes done, IMHO.

There weren' that many survivors of that. Anybody who did was made of strong metal.
Three of my granduncles died in the march or in the camps, two Phil Army, one US Army Reserve.

The Japs were incredibly brutal to their enemies. The total defeat of Imperial Japan was a good thing for the world.
To: Butcher Kilroy
They were a lot more brutal than the Nazis. They were really savages on Koreans and Chinese.

To have survived that, and lived all these years...may he rest in peace.
What a man. What a generation of men.

The abuse from the B March and the Japanese prison system was most intense. That Mr. Rice lived through both is 100% admirable and humbles us lightweight Americans.
