A fatwa issued by Egypt’s top religious authority, which forbids the display of statues has art-lovers fearing it, could be used by Islamic extremists as an excuse to destroy Egypt’s historical heritage.
Egypt’s Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa, the country’s top Islamic jurist, issued the religious edict which declared as un-Islamic the exhibition of statues in homes, basing the decision on texts in the hadith (sayings of the prophet).
Many fear the edict could prod Islamic fundamentalists to attack Egypt’s thousands of ancient and pharaonic statues on show at tourist sites across the country.
“We don’t rule out that someone will enter the Karnak temple in Luxor or any other pharaonic temple and blow it up on the basis of the fatwa,” Gamal al-Ghitani, editor of the literary Akhbar al-Adab magazine, told AFP.

So what does New York and Port Said, Egypt have in common? Originally, American's very own statue of Liberty was to be placed not in New York but at Port Said. The Statue of Liberty was really inspired by the huge statues at Abu Simbel. Auguste Bartholdi, the sculptor of the statue designed the American Lady of Liberty as 'Egypt carrying the light of Asia'. However, the Khedive Ismail decided that the project was too expensive, so the 'Light of Asia' was sent to the US instead, where she became the Statue of Liberty.

Bingo. This is the information age. The PRC with all of their resources can't stop it, neither can mansion loafing, MacDonald eating Immams. It is their culture who is divided. Let's keep doing what we are doing, spreading information about freedom and supporting countries in the middle east promoting it.

Good idea. Let's 1,000 of us say we are muslim clerics and all issue fatwa's over the internet all at the same time. Well, maybe we can't do it, but I am sure the watchful eye in the sky can get some useful ideas...

Wow, I did not know that. Imagine if they had the statue of liberty, they probably would have it torn down by now or looted it until bare like thier paramids.

I've known some Egyptians, and they are very proud of their ancient past (and more than a little ashamed of some of the defacement that took place in the aftermath of the Islamic conquest). I can think of nothing that would unite many (if not most) Egyptians in a reaction against Islamic fundamentalism than if some fanatics attempted to carry out this "fatwa". As much as I would not wish to see any archaeological artifacts destroyed, if it turned the great mass of Egyptians away from fundamentalism, it might be worth it.
Some caliph already tried to dismantle the pyramids (probably for building stone, ultimately; the pyramid of Djedjefre at Abu Roash may never have been finished, but was definitely used as a quarry), beginning with Menkaure / Mycerinus, the smallest of the three big ones at Giza. After months of toil, his wrecking crews had done little damage, so he called off the whole thing. The damage is visible, but the pyramid still stands.

What I wonder about, is how are sissyfied lib artist-types going to deal with this? They prance around and howl angrly about the Bush Doctrine and his plan to establish freedom throughout the Middle East, but this is the very thing he wants to stop!

When Osama declared war on the West in a fatwa issued August 1996 someone in the West claimed that the fatwa was not issued by the Al Qaeda leader because he didn't have the religious status and was not an expert in the Kuran. OBL's men had to admt that he hadn't written the fatwa, he didn't have the religious background, but that he had approved the fatwa.
