This aircraft had just taken off, which meant it was full of fuel. It's a miracle there was no fire and no one was killed.

Was the Galaxy one of the planes Howard Hughes designed for the military?

Don't think so, I think it was a design competition between Boeing and Lockheed Martin. Lockheed won the contract.

Hadn't seen that photo, there was a fire apparently on the port wing. Looks like the #1 is gone.

Thanks. I guess I just heard the Galaxy mentioned in the movie the Aviator and assumed Howard designed it. I hope everyone on board this one will pull through.

That was the "H-4 Hercules" AKA the "Spruce Goose." Obviously Lockheed ressurected the "Hercules" name for the C-130.

My sister lives near Westover AFB (Massachusetts) and C-5's are flying over her house (about 1000 feet over) constantly. They are *big* and *loud*.
I very much hope that nobody was hurt in this accident.

Read that the #2 engine had a flameout on take-off. Must have been above the 3 engine climb-out weight. Glad she didn't catch fire, they couldn't have dumped much fuel if they didn't make the runway.

Howard Hughes design came 20 years before the C-5. The Spruce goose was known originally as HK-1 and later H-4 Hercules.Or even "flying lumberyard" When the C-5 was designed Howard was too busy growing out his fingernails and saving hit urine.

We could always fill one up with them and crash it from a 45° nose down dive.
