High School Bans U.S. Flag [Illegal Immigration]

LONGMONT, Colo. -- Dozens of high school students protested a temporary school policy forbidding students from displaying the U.S. flag - as well as flags from other countries - amid racial tensions following immigration rallies.

Skyline High School Principal Tom Stumpf said American flags were brazenly waved in the faces of Hispanic students and in one case a Mexican flag was thrown into the face of another student.

"When it involves the American flag and its abuse in vilifying other people, we simply will not tolerate it," Stumpf said. "They were using the symbol derisively as misguided patriotism."

Students were warned about the policy Friday and several were suspended, although Stumpf would not provide details. Then, about 100 students protested during lunch time.

Student Dustin Carlson told Denver station KCNC-TV that he was suspended for two days.

"I'm getting suspended for it and personally I think that's uncalled for," he said. "If this country means freedom, then why can't we fly our own flag? It's ridiculous."

Thousands of high school students Friday in California, Texas, Nevada and other states protested the tough immigration laws proposed in the House. Some waved Mexican flags and carried signs saying "We are not criminals."

On Monday, about 150 high school students, including some from Skyline, protested in Longmont.

"People are taking it to a whole other level," said Laura Avitia. "I don't think they know why we were protesting."

If the school bans the flag, they should get their State funding pulled as well.

God help us all.

What happens to students who stand and recite the Pledge at the beginning of the school day?

Just informationally, I vowed last week to confiscate enemy claims on our national territory (i.e. remove Mexican flags if displayed above the U.S. flag, or otherwise improperly), and am happy to report I am indeed NOT yet in jail, and have had to make no counter-insurgent raids.

In fact, I really took the time to notice last week, and was proud of all the U.S. and Texas flags flying high and free in Houston, Texas. At the corner of Westheimer and Kirkwood, I could spot no less than 12 American flags, waving proudly in the breeze.

To clarify: The school has banned ALL flags, I assume this means student-held flags. I hate to say this, but I'm ok with it. What ticks me off is that it was OK for the Latinos to have a few days of waving their flag in everyone's faces, but as soon as the US flag was waved in faces, well, then the flag waving became "dangerous". I'm sure the admin is using the safety issue to cover their behinds. It's stupid, but it's "for the children".

How dangerous or inflammatory will it be when I deck my yard in little American flags on Thursday? Thank God I'm the superintendent and principal of my school!

They go to hell. They go directly to hell, they do not stop at the Statue of Liberty to collect a Constitution.

i don't know much, but please help me understand this

didn't these people immigrate to America to be Americans?

Another FReeper referred to them as colonists. I think he may have that right. Many illegals have no intention of assimilating. They are more interested in changing it to Azatlan

If this country means freedom

A sadly outdated proposition, I'm afraid.

Gang:

Last Friday, I received a call from Randy Zila, superintendent of St. Vrain Valley School District, which contains Skyline High School. He assured me that no flag ban of any kind was in place.

This past weekend, I noted many quotes attributed to Principal Stumpf at Skyline and even a video clip that clearly showed there was in fact a ban on kids showing the US flag in any fashion.

Monday morning, I called Mr. Zila and left a message regarding this info, which it appeared, somehow, he did not have, i.e., that one of his principals had in fact instituted a ban and apparently did not tell the superintendent, or perhaps the superintendent was trying to play ignorant to cover his own butt, although that coverage was pretty shabby.

He called back and asked me to provide proof of my claims. I sent him the story links and video link, and told him this would be a major part of my show Monday evening.

Shortly thereafter, he called back and said he had just spoken with Principal Stumpf, who said he would comply with the superintendent's order to immediately lift the ban, which is against district policy, the Constitution, etc.

So, just a bit of pressure and follow-up got the ban lifted, at least according to Mr. Zila.
