High School Bans U.S. Flag [Illegal Immigration]

LONGMONT, Colo. -- Dozens of high school students protested a temporary school policy forbidding students from displaying the U.S. flag - as well as flags from other countries - amid racial tensions following immigration rallies.

Skyline High School Principal Tom Stumpf said American flags were brazenly waved in the faces of Hispanic students and in one case a Mexican flag was thrown into the face of another student.

"When it involves the American flag and its abuse in vilifying other people, we simply will not tolerate it," Stumpf said. "They were using the symbol derisively as misguided patriotism."

Students were warned about the policy Friday and several were suspended, although Stumpf would not provide details. Then, about 100 students protested during lunch time.

Student Dustin Carlson told Denver station KCNC-TV that he was suspended for two days.

"I'm getting suspended for it and personally I think that's uncalled for," he said. "If this country means freedom, then why can't we fly our own flag? It's ridiculous."

Thousands of high school students Friday in California, Texas, Nevada and other states protested the tough immigration laws proposed in the House. Some waved Mexican flags and carried signs saying "We are not criminals."

On Monday, about 150 high school students, including some from Skyline, protested in Longmont.

"People are taking it to a whole other level," said Laura Avitia. "I don't think they know why we were protesting."

To liberals like Tom Stumpf, we're the racists and the invaders.

I am now thoroughly convinced that this country has gone stark-raving mad!

If the school bans the flag, they should get their State funding pulled as well.

This was on O'Reilly last week.
Stupid principal over-reacting. He banned ALL flags, even the U.S. flag. Moron with no backbone and no brains.
He should have let the students work it out. That's what free speech, protesting and freedom to assemble is all about.

Well, I'm pretty open to reason. But, I seriously doubt if Laura could explain it to me.

Dozens of high school students protested a temporary school policy forbidding students from displaying the U.S. flag - as well as flags from other countries - amid racial tensions following immigration rallies.

When they started villifying the display of confederate symbols in the south, I knew it was only a matter of time before they started villifying the display of Old Glory on American soil.

God, I hate being right. WTH is wrong with a country when people think you shouldn't fly your own flag? What is it with these liberals' pathologlical need to hate themselves and their own country anyway?

misguided patriotism?"

This must be opposite of "guided patriotism," where a student may make vague references to U.S. sovereignty, and may wear understated, muted colors of powder blue, light pink, and creme. They may also play a "Muzak" version of "America, the Beautiful," as long as no lyrics are actually sung.

IN WHICH IT IS EXPLAINED THAT THE BIGGEST LATINO ORGANIZATION DREADS BECOMING AMERICAN [Michael Ledeen]

The Richmond Times-Dispatch, in a thoughtful editorial yesterday, called attention to the email sent out by La Raza, the biggest Latino organization in the United States, first mentioned by The Corner last Thursday:

The e-mail refers to congressional legislation that would, among other things, (a) provide grants to immigrants taking English classes, (b) permit those who gain English proficiency to apply for citizenship one year early, and (c) provide grants to groups offering instruction in U.S. civics and American history. These ideas hardly seem provocative; learning English and American civics used to be something immigrants did enthusiastically. The e-mail about the bill, however, warns that "while it doesn't overtly mention assimilation, it is very strong on the patriotism and traditional American values language in a way which is potentially dangerous to our communities."

(More on the memo here.)

It sounds like La Raza has proclaimed itself un-American, don't you think? They don't want their people to assimilate, and they don't seem to like "patriotism" or "traditional American values."

Somebody might mention this to President Bush...

A lot of them still think California and Texas belongs to Mexico and they are going to take it back. It may take 20 to 30 years, but once they have the numbers ....

It would seem that way but not all legal immigrants that come to America want to become Americans. Thus we have Mexican - Americans. Chineses - Americans. etc.

That hyphen is a bad thing. From now on I want the government to include a block for my heritage. I'm Swiss-German-American & I demand to have a check off block on all government forms. Further, I demand to recieve feee Swiss-German-American language training in America.
