On the heels of the 500,000-person Los Angeles street demonstration, the illegal-alien lobby is promoting a major one-day boycott of American life to demonstrate its clout.
It is set for May – May Day – as it is known throughout the socialist and communist world.
It's called "A Day Without Latinos."
Organizers, like the Mexican American Political Association, are calling on their people to stay home from school, work and shopping and to protest out in the streets instead.
Protest what? I can only assume that they believe Americans have been inhospitable to them – only providing 12 million to 20 million illegal aliens with comforts they never knew at home.
If you're like me, watching those 500,000 people in the streets of my former home town last week prompted a visceral reaction.
Who were these people flying the American flag upside down? Who were these people waving Mexican flags in my country? Who were these people trashing the country in which they are so determined to stay? Who were these people who don't have jobs that require their energies that day? Who were these people that didn't have schools to attend?
I'll tell you who they were: They were mostly – probably overwhelmingly – illegal aliens.
And that's why those numbers should scare us.
I have long believed that our own government is lying to us when officials report only 11 million or 12 million illegal aliens in this country. I think the real number could easily be twice that. And when you see the photos of those demonstrations in Chicago and Los Angeles, you start to realize just how potent a force those millions of illegals are.
We have indeed been invaded – and there is yet no determined effort to repel the invaders, to turn them back, to stop the flow of more.
Our government is not abiding by the laws of the land or the will of the people. U.S. citizens are angry about this invasion – maybe angrier about this betrayal of trust than any other single issue. That's how I read it.
The Minutemen made a splash for awhile, but I think it's time to mobilize 300 million Americans in an action in which we can all play a role, make our voices heard and turn up the heat on the politicians in Washington and the businesses that benefit so much from cheap labor.
Here's my idea.
If the illegal alien agitators want to have a "Day Without Latinos," I would suggest we plan a much bigger event – one that would truly bring this country to its knees for one day.
Let's organize a "Day Without Americans."
You want to find out hot to stop the clock? You want to find out who really makes this country tick? You want to see who makes the trains run on time? Just try a day without Americans.
I think the illegal alien agitators have really goofed on this strategy. Because, frankly, I don't think their "Day Without Latinos" will be any different than any other day for most of us. But a "Day Without Americans" will be a day unlike any we have ever seen in the history of this nation.
It's not Latinos or any other ethnic group that makes this country great. It's Americans that do.
That's the message we need to get across. And the only disadvantage we have in organizing such an event is the work ethic of the average American. We don't take days off from work to march in the streets and whine about our conditions. We don't participate in boycotts over this cause or that, because we are busy putting food on the table for our children and helping our neighbors. We don't shout and cry and paint our faces and act like children – we pay our taxes and keep our mouths shut and take care of ourselves and our families.
Well, it's time to take a page out of the book of our enemies – and, believe me, America, we have some real enemies inside the gates.
It's time to rise up angry – not against the illegal aliens who have taken advantage of this great country, but against the politicians who have not only permitted it, but encouraged it, all but handing out engraved invitations.
That would be the theme behind my "Day Without Americans." What do you think?

Actually, I think we should see to it that the "day without latinos" is like DU's "not another dime" day.
Anyone (including latinos) who is or wants to be American, should go to work and shop or whatever they would normally do, and make the day without latinos a big fizzle.

George W is wrong on this issue.
About 15%-20% of the residents of California are now illegal. I have illegals related to me by marriage. I've two grandchildren whose father's extended family is here illegally, so I know the issue as well as most.
Bush et al need to prove they're serious about this issue by closing the border immediately. First stop the bleeding, then prescribe whatever anti-immigration vaccine or medication you want, but until the border is closed then I don't believe Bush or anyone else in power really cares a rat's ass about the problem.
I typically don't go for things like this, or boycotts, or mass mailings to elected losers.
If we can agree to all go to the pub instead of to work, I might get with the program............
That's nice, except it would devestate both our economy as well as Mexico's, which would make the problem worse.
The extreme anti-immigration crowd (OK, fine, anti-illegal immigration, that's what they say, but the extremist usually end up being against virtually all immigration if you actually listen to their arguments, which almost always apply to legal immigrants too) fails to realize the benefits of undercutting liberal wage laws and unions through competition. It makes prices for all of us cheaper, creates greater competition, and eventually creates more jobs through increased wealth.
It's a demand problem, we won't beat it through stopping the supply, the demand is too great. It's the same problem with the war on drugs, except unlike drugs, immigrants are good for us.
We need a more orderly process. We should have a legal system to get to what we need and have now illegally, while stopping illegal criminals and other such unsavory folks. But this 'close the borders' nonsense won't fix the problem, will hurt the economy, and ultimately make us less secure by making us feel more secure when nothing is changing.
BS. It puts a lot of people out of business when they pay their taxes and follow the other dictates of govt. regulations and the ones hiring illegals don't. I've seen it. What kind of economy do you want to create, here? Completely underground? Then, say so. According to Bears and Stern it will be in a few years anyway.
Subsidize your own labor.
I think it is a heavy burden to expect businesses enforce the immigration laws, unpaid. They already collect the taxes, at considerable risk. It will take lots of people to get this under contro, not just employers. For instance, why not make it illegal to rent housing, bank, buy groceries etc. This problem got out of hand with local and state authorities waiting for the feds to act, but I don't think they can do it themselves.
No, he is dead right on this issue. Anyone with half a brain understands that the Mexican immigration mess has been created by our own inability to address the motivations for staying illegally and to control the numbers by controlling the "sugar" that draws the "ants" into the house.
The 1986 amnesty failed because we did not couple it with usable and enforceable employer reforms and back it up with strong border protections.
What Bush has desired and said more times than I care to repeat, is that we need comprehensive reforms, understanding that there are realities to deal with that are not going to go away and cannot be addressed immediately and will take time to resolve.
The primary reason that so many of them have stacked up is that we took away their freedom to transit back and forth. Migrant workers must be able to migrate!
Secondly, this string of nonsensical enforcement policies to make the anti-migrant groups happy, has resulted in a huge document forging industry that further makes policing employers impossible.
The worker visa idea will help to facilitate migration once again, and takes into account our need for workers. It also facilitated security screening. But Bush has never attempted to micromanage the reform process. He simply stated what he wants to occur and made three suggestions to get us there.
The first suggestion is to strengthen border enforcement, which has been underway for the last four years. More money, more high tech, more agents and some fencing.
Second is the worker visa and employer reforms. Much stronger enforcement and a data base that tells us where each migrant is and who he is employed with. Taxes and social security collection will be mandatory and back taxes will be made up and fines assessed and paid.
Third is the implementation of forgery proof ID's and documents and the reform of the application process for permanent residence which includes increasing the quotas and streamlining and enforcing the process better. All this will come to pass as items one and two are implemented and it is dependent on them.
These were his suggestions, and the basis for the reform package, and if only one or two of them are implemented, the whole process is then flawed.
Flawed reforms seem to be the norm because the public never gets on the same page. Every attempt is flawed because of ignorance and political posturing.
I'm sick of it!
If you want to know who and what is screwing up immigration, all some of you need to do is to look in the mirror. I have looked in mine, and it is not me.

That's partly true. But right now, the rules are uninforcable, and thus practically everyone does hire them, so it doesn't hurt many if any people.
But even assuming you are right, this just meas that we need a guest worker program like Bush, Brownback and the like suggest, to allow everyone to engage in it legally, as most are now because of the current unenforcability of the law.
What kind of economy do you want to create, here?
A free market one, not riddled with protectionism, which is exactly what 'enforcement only' solutions are.

As I already pointed out, you already HAVE a huge underground economy. The way to fix it is to bring it out in the light so everybody can participate.

When he Fed Gov can demonstrate that they can control the border FIRST, then I will listen to how they plan to deal with the ones that are already here. Until then, they just keep coming and we are not going to stop them by some propsal written on a piece of paper.
They have laws in place that are not being enfored. What good are they? I don't blame the illegals, I blame the pandering Left Wing Socialist Politicians and the Republican Party for not having the guts to stand up for what is best for this country.
The "unenforcable law" would be enforced real quick if you or I weren't paying taxes, instead of someone who has illegals working for them. It's hurt enough people. Hell, one is too many in the land where individual rights are supposed to be protected from greedy group/gang interests.
The underground economy is second largest in the world. I believe by 2010 it is supposed to be larger than our legitimate economy.

Excuse me .. it has nothing to do with issues. It has to do with running a business. Is he supposed to shut down the business for a day just to "support" my personal conviction ..?? I don't think so!
I'm not asking anybody to support me .. I'm saying I'm not going to make my employer suffer my being gone just because of my personal conviction (which I know he doesn't share). To do otherwise is very selfish.
You'll never know until you ask, maybe he would support you.
If he doesn't and you let his opinions rule your convictions then you shouldn't have political convictions to begin with since you can't afford them.
My Boss will support me, I know because if he doesn't, I will rip into him like a chainsaw through butter, and he knows it.

How ironic that then a 'boatload' of illegals cross our border no one gets upset. But a literal boatload of asian illegals show up and we are being invaded.
The diference is they are asian and dont look like us.
That is a definition of racism.
