A roiling sea of immigrants - many of them in the country illegally - and their supporters poured across the Brooklyn Bridge and into Manhattan yesterday to protest what they call "oppressive" reform measures currently under consideration in Congress.
Marchers, waving flags from Mexico, Colombia, Honduras and El Salvador, chanted and carried signs recalling America's roots during the demonstration, organized by state Sen. Ruben Diaz, a Bronx Democrat and native of Puerto Rico.
"That flag on top of the Brooklyn Bridge is symbolic because all these other flags, all these other nations, are covered by the USA," declared Ismael Claudio, 35, also a native Puerto Rican and therefore a U.S. citizen.
In the House, legislation already has passed that would set penalties for anyone who knowingly assists or encourages an illegal immigrant to remain in the country.
The Senate may adopt a broader bill that would be less punitive, create a guest-worker program and open a path to citizenship for the estimated 11M immigrants now in the country without proper papers.
As they trekked over the bridge, demonstrators carried signs proclaiming, "Did the pilgrims need green cards?"
Patricia Urgules, 35, of Ecuador, said......"I came here in search of the American Dream - the dream to be free, to be treated equally," she said. "We only ask for those basic principles this country was founded on."
Construction worker Eduardo Segundo, 40, of Harlem, scoffs at the notion, mentioned by Mayor Bloomberg last week, of a wall on the U.S.-Mexican border.
He recalled sneaking across the border 12 years ago - and said 20 of his and his wife's relatives now live in the United States. ".....The wall that they build will not work. People will just figure out a way to cross."

Got numbers? Without numbers not going to buy the "alot less than the continuing costs of housing, schooling, medicating, prosecuting, insuring, etc ".
I shudder to think!!!!
Imagined and self-serving numbers.
I don't know. Is it their mentality or what? Maybe they are mentally fighting learning the English language and only do it because they HAVE to. They sure would have it easier here if they could grasp English.
I have nothing against aliens coming to America and becoming legal. Most of our ancestors came from a foreign land. But do it legally. Become a citizen. Pay taxes like the rest of us. But to try to buck the system and thumb their noses at us is just appalling to me. And they wonder why we are fighting them!
No one has disputed Ted Kennedy's numbers by providing better numbers. If anything he is low-balling the solution by referring to the first-year cost.
If you hear the correct date, let me know ok? They might have more on Fox News when we get closer to May. But let me know if you find out anything.
We should not have to pay anything to get them out----just stop the tax-paid benefits and they will leave of their own accord.
Any number is better that the falsehood you've embraced. The property forfeited by the departing criminals should more than equal the bus and fuel costs.
Zero. There, I've just provided you with a better number.
The ones enrolled in LAUSD cost us $10,000 a year on top of the food stamps, subsidized housing, free medical care, etc.
But, we will pay one way or the other. As a starting point for estimation, TK's cost for deporting all the illegal aliens is $240 billion. I believe that is first year only. These other factors also have costs that can be estimated. We ought to be using numbers rather than vague hand waving and other fallacious argumentum ad populi.
(illegals say walls won't keep them out)
They why do they protest teh idea of a wall?!?!
A wall w/ surveillance will keep them out.
What really needs to happen is these people need a reason to stay in Mexico. Mr. Fox and his elite supporters are in for a hell of a time when all these lovely campesinos start wearing Che T-shirts...
What is your program going to use to pay the enforcement agents?
What's wrong with their existing salaries?
How are the existing agents going to deal with millions of cases? They can handle perhaps 50,000 cases a year. You will need to hire a million new agents.
Another way is to inform companies who hire illegal aliens that you will not invest in companies that break the law.
Also check your mutual funds to see if they are invested in companies that employ illegals. Notify your mutual fund you do not want your money invested with companies that break the law.
$20,000 per illegal? What's he proposing? Lear jets and caviar?
The same way they deal with the illegal alien felons clogging our prison systems. One at a time.
That's the cost of employing the new agents. The cost per immigrant is not a consideration in the estimate. It doesn't matter if they fly home or walk forced-march home.
I hear ya!
I also heard from the Mayor of Detroit this past year that the Muslim women have been coming over to Michigan when they get pregnant, stay with family until due date, and deliver their babies in the Detroit hospital! For free! Then they go back home. Talk about outrage!
The media sure keeps this swept under the rug though. And the Mayor was ask what can he do about it? He said "Your guess is as good as mine." Pretty good, eh?
