Former hostage Jill Carroll strongly disavowed statements she had made during captivity in Iraq and shortly after her release, saying Saturday she had been repeatedly threatened.
In a video, recorded before she was freed and posted by her captors on an Islamist Web site, Carroll spoke out against the U.S. military presence. But Carroll said the recording was made under threat. Her editor has said three men were pointing guns at her at the time.
"During my last night in captivity, my captors forced me to participate in a propaganda video. They told me I would be released if I cooperated. I was living in a threatening environment, under their control, and wanted to go home alive. So I agreed," she said in a statement read by her editor in Boston.
"Things that I was forced to say while captive are now being taken by some as an accurate reflection of my personal views. They are not."

Huh??? Gave a TV interview that would never be broadcast on TV? Strange.
That is not to say that I have made up my mind about this story. I just don't blame anyone for the comments they may make with a gun pointed to their head, under heavy medication or during childbirth.
Granted, but it is still possible to give a coerced propaganda performamce without acting giddy about it (no smiling, a raised eyebrow, something). She came off as entirely tooooooo happy IMHO. (What are MMQ's?)
I'm not buyin' what she's sellin'. PERIOD.
This statement reads like it was ghostwritten. Damage control by daddy dearest and/or CSM. But let's say it wasn't (ghostwritten.) So, darling Jull lied before and before that? But now she's not lying? And next time she appears on the boob tube as a celebrity known for being known, will she be lying or telling the truth? I need some guidance here. Aren't all Cretans liars?
If this is all a fake, why does she sound so different than that Christian peace group when their people were released? Carroll said the military had been great. A real scumbag could never say that. It would be like a vampire saying the rosary.
So she's a liberal against the war--why on Earth wouldn't she let those statements sit as-is if they reflect her views accurately? People here who say she's lying now have NO idea whether she is or isn't (neither do I). Like DUmmies, they're going with their gut, with emotions, when they have no idea as to the real facts.
One fact we do know: She has come out and said those statements were made while guns were pointed at her. Why on Earth would she reveal that if she only wants to push an agenda now? How does revealing that help "her cause"?
Not me. Better to die with honor than live with NONE.
Must've been hard for her to arrange to have her translator shot, seeing as she probably had to go through the translator to make the arrangements.
Agreed. But she's a 28 year old (probably leftist) junior level journalist. I can't hold her statements against her at this time. She is very lucky to hpave survived. (MMQ = Monday Morning Quarterback)
Jill Carrol is a Rachel Corrie "wannabee" only without Rachael's balls!
Clearly you did not hear her initial statment where she claims she was NEVER threatened, was treated very very well, etc.
I think there a lot of mean people on the thread. Now that Jill has made a statement like this then it is Christian to give her the bennifit of the doubt for now. If you all can't imagine yourself put into a position like this then you have no right to comment. I am sure that she still has fear of these people finding her and killing her if she says the wrong thing. I would sure hate to have some of these people here as my friends.
You have your opinion, I have mine.
Maybe some were suspicious of this "kidnapping" long before she was released. I know I was, and still am. We'll see what kind of interviews she gives now that she's safely out of Iraq. If she continues saying the kinds of things she said EVEN BEFORE she was kidnapped (in her articles and columns), then I'll be pretty convinced she was assisting in this, not a captive.
Her statement does take some of the "stinkiness" away. Now I'll wait to see what develops and keep my research on floppy disk for a while...
But hey the crow ain't bad... Tastes like chicken.
Thought you might want to see this new statement.
Rockaby, I can understand someone saying what they think is necessary to survive--knowing full well it can be retracted, as this statement was. However, there's a lot of other fishy goings-on in this case that still just don't sound right. Perhaps it will all be explained--but for now, I'm skeptical of her story.
