Congresswoman [McKinney] Accuses Capitol Police Officer of Racial Bias
New York Times ^ | April 1, 2006 | Carl Hulse

Representative Cynthia A. McKinney and her legal advisers blamed racial bias Friday for her run-in with a Capitol police officer as the incident ballooned into a political furor.

At a news conference at Howard University, Ms. McKinney, a Georgia Democrat, said her physical altercation with the unidentified officer, who was screening visitors to a House office building on Wednesday, was the officer's fault.

"Let me be clear," Ms. McKinney said, surrounded by supporters at the historically black university. "This whole incident was instigated by the inappropriate touching and stopping of me, a female black congresswoman. I deeply regret this incident occurred, and I am certain that after a full review of the facts, I will be exonerated."

One of her lawyers, James Myart, said the case typified a pattern of police harassment of black Americans. "My belief is this is no different than that: 'they all look alike,' " he said.

The encounter took place at a checkpoint to a building across Independence Avenue from the Capitol. According to accounts by police officers and Congressional officials, Ms. McKinney went around one of the metal detectors that are at the entrances and staffed by the police. The officer reportedly told her to stop, and when she did not he apparently tried to stop her, provoking a physical response from Ms. McKinney. Members of Congress are allowed to sidestep the metal detectors.

Ms. McKinney acknowledged that she had not been wearing the lapel pin that would have identified her as a member of Congress. But she said the police responsible for protecting lawmakers should recognize them on sight.

Mr. Myart, the lawyer, said Ms. McKinney was exploring her legal options and would pursue a criminal investigation against the officer.

McKinny's disregard for security is DEMOCRAT PARTY POLICY.

As another FReeper pointed out, this is very similar to John Kerry saying his falling down on a ski slope was the Secret Service's fault.

It was from a satire site. The poster failed to note that in his post.

You should have noted that in the post. There's enough misinformation in the news today, so don't add to the problem.

Everything is race to a racist.

When all you have is a hammer, every problem must be a nail.

Don't feel stupid; It's not your fault. It's the poster's responsibility to source the quote. Either it was an honest mistake on his part, or he was trolling for responses.

That poster is always pimping his satire site, without noting that it's satire. Very tiresome.

This may offend some, but the N word needs to be resurrected for use as a description of this woman. (by the way, it can also be used on white trash also)

I predicted this less than two hours after the assault.
"Those damn racist security guards! They'd never have stopped a white woman like that!

It's just a matter of hours until we hear that."

Cynthia needs to be sentenced to an anger management course... and racial sensitivity training as well. Although a padded cell may be more appropriate.

So it wasn't an honest mistake, but instead deliberate trolling.

All she had to do is identify herself as a member of Congress. Is she too big for that?

Don't you think the police would have stopped an unidentified white woman who tried to bypass the metal detector?

Anyone have an explanation as to why we have all our worst people in Congress?

she said the police responsible for protecting lawmakers should recognize them on sight.

There are 535 congresscritters, a few more if you count the non-voting reps from DC, etc. How many people can recognize quickly on sight that many people? Dang few, even in the political business where such skill would be an asset. Bill Clinton might be able to do it with his famously good memory for everything (except the truth.) If she were to make this claim in her defense in court I'd put her on the stand with the following challenge. Give her pictures of 1000 people and have her pull out and successfully identify the top 535 donors to her last campaign.
