OAKLAND Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean used the M-word during a brief appearance Friday morning before area party leaders. Yes, this scion of the Democratic Party, this Ivy League M.D. and former governor of Vermont broached the unbroachable with his loyalists in a clear attempt to re-establish his party as, pardon the French, moral.
"We are our brothers' keepers," Dean said, using a biblical reference to sum up the new, 60-second party message and articulate what he considers the core difference between the blue and the red.
"The Republican Party is a party of self-absorption and selfishness," he said.
The Democratic National Committee chairman came here to rally local Democrats around the immigration debate taking place in Washington, D.C., and to mobilize his party as the mid-term campaign season heats up.
He said Republicans are exploiting immigrants this election year for political gain, much the same way they used the gay marriage issue in 2004 to frighten voters.
"In 2006 it's immigrants. That's what their strategy is on the Republican side: Divide people, scapegoat them, set them aside, point the finger at them," Dean said. "Well, thatmay be good for the Republican Party, but it's bad for America, and we're not going to do that."
He skipped over the fact that he and President Bush have professed agreement on the legislation at the heart of the debate.
Dean called for stronger border control but said the country needs solutions that "do not demonize any human being."
In his speech at a union hall on Hegenberger Road, Dean said he could support a Senate bill that provides a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, although he said the bill in its present form is not perfect.
Bush also has said he supports the measure.
Dean called a House bill by Wisconsin Rep. James Sensenbrenner that sparked huge demonstrations by Hispanics in cities around the county a "disgrace and an embarrassment.
"It's unreasonable and ineffective and will cause a bigger mess," he said.
The 2004 presidential hopeful promised local Democratic leaders a win in 2008, and he acknowledged that the party lost in 2004 on the so-called "moral" issues.
Democrats would put honesty back in government, ban middle-of-the-night legislation, support a strong national defense, a retirement system that benefits workers and not big business, and health care for everybody, he said.
The majority of Americans think it is immoral not to have health care for everybody; they think it is immoral to wage an unjust war and have big right-wing government making personal decisions, he said.
"I think that's a pretty good message, and I think I delivered it under a minute," Dean said smiling.
Local Democrat Servita Loya of Walnut Creek did not agree. It was a typical Democratic speech filled with vagaries, she said.
"I was not impressed," she said.
His epitath
"Protect our borders? - DISGRACE!; enforce the laws? EMBARESSMENT!"
"health care for everybody"
I believe we already have that. Who pays for it is the problem.
Wesley Mouch, Tinky Holloway, Bertram Scudder, and Howard Dean. Ayn Rand created some great socialist characters, didn't she? ;)
So now they found morality???
Does any one in their right mind listen to this clown?
If he were on fire, I wouldn't waste my piss to put him out.
---"We are our brothers' keepers," Dean said---
Or at least the keeper of our brothers' wallet...
I hope he signs on a spokespimple for the dems 'til the day he dies.
I can hear him screaming in the coffin at his own memorial as well.
Howie, Howie, Howie. As long as your party is the party of infanticide, you will never be able to pull the "moral" trick on us. We are much smarter than that.
Translation: We are communists.
Pray for W and Our Freedom Fighters
I second that Norm.
Howard Dean...probably knows more Bible than a lot of today's liberal theologians.
Now that's a scary thing.
hey I thought this was the party that was for 'separation of church and state'...? (whatever that means) what's this 'brother's keeper' mess?
I think Michael Savage has already pointed out on numerous occasions that liberalism is a mental disorder, however it bears repeating as often as possible.
"...he acknowledged that the party lost in 2004 on the so-called "moral" issues.
So now they found morality???"
No, they found "so-called" morality.
Did his eighteenth-century whaling captain relative ever carry human cargo?
amen. their idea of charity starts not a home, but in your wallet.
Republicans are self-absorbed and selfish? Democrats are the ones advocating unlimited, unrestricted abortion. Can you think of anything more selfish than destroying your own child?
