Harris' Senate campaign 'imploding'
Orlando Sentinel ^ | 4/1/06 | Jim Stratton

Posted on 04/01/2006 4:14:49 AM PST by aynrandfreak

The last of U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris' key staffers appear ready to abandon her campaign for the U.S. Senate in a wave of resignations expected to start this weekend.

Sources close to the campaign said Friday that the defections would touch virtually every level of her operation.

Harris, who is running against Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson, is likely to lose her chief political strategist, her campaign manager, her spokeswoman, her director of field operations and even a traveling aide who helps hand out stickers at campaign appearances.

It is the latest and most dramatic indication so far that her campaign is on the verge of collapse.

"I've never seen staffers go like this," said David Johnson, a Republican pollster and consultant. "It's just imploding."

Calls and e-mails to the campaign were not returned Friday night, but sources said Harris met with staffers earlier in the day to tell them she would be hiring new people to replace those who had already left.

Campaign workers could stay, she said, but they would have to recommit themselves to the Senate race. She gave them until 5 p.m. Sunday to decide.

Two sources familiar with what happened at the meeting said Harris, in part, blamed the staff for the chaos that has consumed the campaign. Those sources did not want to be identified because they were not authorized to speak for the campaign.

When staffers start jumping ship the handwriting is on the wall.

No, I didn't watch Harris for the simple fact she is making a fool of herself. Since I actually do know her, it is painful to watch.

I still do not think the picture of her on a horse makes her look like a slut, which my comments was about.

Nowhere in my post did I endorse Harris, which you seem to imply I did.

If she stays in the race, I still will vote for her because she is a decent honset person with whom I trust.

Lighten up. This pic was not a political poster just some over sexed Freeps started using it. However, I will bet you if more "middle aged" women looked as good on horseback as Harris does, there would be more riding 'em.

It's (Harris winning) going to be disastrous...for Florida Democrats..Why else all the the bad press so far in advance of the election?

Old saying, bet on the winner, and Harris has proved she's a winner.

Just trying to figure out who the "'em" refers to -- horses or "middle aged" women. 8>)

Harris ... is likely to lose ... even a traveling aide who helps hand out stickers at campaign appearances.

A tragedy of comic proportions! How low can this go?

It wouldn't be a Harris thread if someone didn't call her a slut.
I get quite disgusted over it.

The Orlando Sentinel endorsed Hanoi Kerry in 2004, calling Bush a failure. The Orlando Sentinel wants Nelson to win, and trys to undermine all Republicans.
Anything the Orlando Sentinel prints is suspect: certain to be left-biased, likely to be false, exaggerated, and deliberately misleading.
I just sent a check to the Harris campaign.

The Sentinel sure wasn't doing Harris any favors with the photo they've decided to run..

While I appreciate what she did in the 2000 election, I just wish Katherine would be realistic about her chances which are extremely low. Yes she was loyal to us when we needed her but do we really owe her payment with a doomed senate seat?

I say no. The senate is too important to us right now. If the Democrats take over one house, it will be he** for the next 2 years.

Katherine do the right thing, for your party and better yet your country.

Exactly! Like you did in the 2000 election, like you did winning the House seat and being a strong conservative despite the Democratic vicious attacks and now Rino flack.

I saw that on Hannity and Colmes. You are absolutely right, she was displaying her boobs for the camera. She is a fine looking mature babe with a nice rack, but she needs to let someone else (Jeb!) run for that senate seat.

One of the guys on the right appears to be staring at her volupuousness. (...not that its a bad thing, but you hate to have it published in the paper.)

She defines incompetence. Misstep after misstep until there is no where else to go. At first I supported her, sent money, but she is way in over her head.

There are plenty of candidates that can beat Nelson. Word is Tommy Franks may be interested in running, if not look to the Florida state house for additional viable candidates. All of the other candidates poll beating Nelson -- Harris is 15-20 points back.

Now if Jeb were to run, it would be a wipe out for Nelson.

Yes, Harris should go and go now while it is early. I have no idea what combination of ego and idiocy has produced this campaign, but it belongs entirely to her.
