DURHAM, N.C. - The father of the woman who has accused members of the Duke lacrosse team of sexually assaulting her said he didn't find out that his daughter was the reported victim - and that she is an exotic dancer - until a reporter visited his house.
The retired trucker who lives in Durham said he saw his daughter the day after the reported attack, but she didn't say anything was wrong. She even left her car at the house for several days because he said she didn't want to drive it.
Her father, a quiet man who tinkers on cars as a hobby, said he saw news reports about the attack.
"I didn't know it was my daughter," he said. The Charlotte Observer generally does not name victims of sexual assault, so his name is being withheld to protect the identity of his daughter.
The case has ignited campus protests and stirred racial tension in Durham. The woman at the center of the case is black, and the men she accuses are white. She also is a student at N.C. Central University, a historically black college near Durham's inner-city, compared with the more expensive Duke campus.
DNA tests have been conducted on 46 of the lacrosse players, who deny the allegations. A 47th member, who is black, was not tested because the woman said her attackers were white.
Last week, a reporter stopped by the reported victim's house looking for her, the woman's father said, but he said he didn't know what was going on. He called his daughter and she said the district attorney told her not talk to anyone.
"(She) didn't tell us anything about it," he said.
He said he also found out through the media that his daughter, who is the youngest of three, was an exotic dancer.
"She always told me she was going to work," he said.
On Friday, he installed a timing belt in a car and watched his daughter's two children play outside the house. He said working on cars and playing with the grandchildren helps take his mind off what's happening with his daughter.
He said she seems to be doing "pretty good," and so is the rest of the family. He said they haven't talked much about the reported incident, but it weighs heavily on his mind. He said he's grateful that N.C. Central has been so supportive, but he doesn't like how his daughter has been portrayed in the media. And he's especially frustrated that no one has been charged in the connection with the allegations.
"If it had been anybody but them, they would have been locked up, but yet they didn't because it's Duke," he said. "I hope them boys - if they did it - I hope they get what they deserve. I hope they don't go lenient on them."
District Attorney Michael Nifong said he's waiting for results of the DNA test and that he does not expect to file charges in the case any earlier than next week.
I am in Raleigh; he's on TV 24/7; if not local, then cable and national.

True enough. Do you think that also applies to witnesses to a crime? I'm not sure but I could see it if they were concerned they would be involved by their mere presence. They've now had plenty of time to consult their attorneys I would think. I would like to see some individual representation and not four attorneys representing the entire bunch. I would hazard a guess many of these kids families can afford individual representation.

And other than whether they've talked to the police or not, you haven't contradicted one other thing I said, so don't go there.

That's not what happened; she got there before midnight, went in and started doing whatever they do, said the men got "excited," they got scared and left. The neighbor says he saw them come out in about 20 minutes, go back in supposedly to "get her shoes" and then the two of them got back in the car and sped off.
I went there and I'll go there again if necessary to bring out other points of view. My post said I wasn't implying you didn't read or hear what you were saying, I said there are contradictory stories out there and gave you two of many that contradicted what you have been saying. I was illustrating a point not questioning your accuracy. I appreciate how close you are to this event and have much more information than I have. I also know I've asked you for links to any of your facts and you haven't provided any. I read your last post and I now gather you're hearing this on tv and the radio. I don't know at this point what happened and nobody else does either. Clearly the DA bothers you but that doesn't do it for me. Do you have any information that says otherwise regarding the DA being court ordered and where are you reading that the players are cooperating?
With the circus going on down there--If my son was a towel boy for this team I'd be getting a lawyer. I've never seen kids tried and found guilty so quickly in my life...A parent would be crazy not to have a lawyer with the mentality surrounding this case.
In spite of the fact that Kobe bought his way out and the victim was a total flake who thought she was consenting to vaginal sex and got anal instead, yes, there would be evidence consistent with rape, just like that.
I don't think Kobe was innocent or guilty, he's just scum that committed the most expensive sexual act in recorded history (lost endorsement contracts).

Or maybe they paid them and then they cut out and there was a dustup then.
But if they didn't do what they were hired to do like for the whole time, maybe the guys refused to pay them the full amount.

This guy is looking for his fifteen minutes and d/n realize people here in NC are beginning to see him for the clown he is. He has put these 47 young men through misery--if they are not guilty as charged, where will they go to get back their names?
There is only one black player on the Duke lacrosse team -- according to the media in the Charlotte area, the stripper made a point to say that the black fellow was not involved. He was not tested but 47 white guys were.
This whole thing has smelled to high heaven from the get go.
Some parents are very involved; some aren't. Gives you a little insight into her home life, though, that he didn't know what she did for a living.

The account seems contradictory to me. How would he not know about the rape if he saw her in the hospital the next day, the same day he claims he saw her seeming normal?
I think you missed my point. If it had been a no hassles job, that party would have still been going on even after the dancers left and not completely dispersed by the time the cops arrived.
So we know there was an altercation of some type and it spooked the entire team into leaving immediately.
