I knew a few of those old men in my time, a great privilege. Most of them are now dead, some recently. But I remember them.
Since the ones I knew lived in Maine, they were lobstermen, boat captains, caretakers, truck drivers, fuel oil deliverers, car mechanics. It taught me a lesson that I've kept ever since, that simple people and manual laborers are often--maybe usually--better men than the rich and famous.
