TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Iran successfully test-fired a missile that can avoid radar and hit several targets simultaneously using multiple warheads, the military said Friday.
Gen. Hossein Salami, the air force chief of the elite Revolutionary Guards, did not specify the missile's range, saying it depends on the weight of its warheads. But state-run television described the weapon as "ballistic," suggesting it's of comparable range to Iran's existing ballistic rocket, which can travel 2,000 kilometres and reach arch-foe Israel and U.S. bases in the Middle East.
"Today, a remarkable goal of the Islamic Republic of Iran's defence forces was realized with the successful test-firing of a new missile with greater technical and tactical capabilities than those previously produced," Salami said on state-run television.
It showed a clip of the launch of what it called the Fajr-3, with "fajr" meaning "victory" in Farsi.
"It can avoid anti-missile missiles and strike the target," Salami said. He said the missile would carry a multiple warhead, and each warhead would be capable of hitting its target precisely.
"This news causes much concern, and that concern is shared by many countries in the international community, about Iran's aggressive nuclear weapons program and her parallel efforts to develop delivery systems, both in the field of ballistic missiles and cruise missiles," said Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev.

The Honorable Curt Weldon is not a FORMER congressman.
Disinformation to attempt deterrance.
Oh, yeah, and a couple of Boomers in the Indian Ocean. :-)
Ooops. Sorry, Congressman Weldon.
How about we nuke 'em first?
MIRVs (Multiple Independant Re-entry Vehicles) are completely different animals: they're warheads attached to ICBMs, which actually leave the atmosphere. I agree, that's way ahead of their capabilities now.
We're talking MITWs here (Multiple Targetable Independant Warheads), which can be attached to conventional missiles; which seems to be what they're doing.
See Post #26. And what has he got to lose? ;-)
Does anyone hear really think that the US or Israel is willing to attack Iran and risk a full on invasion of Iraq by Iranian troops (there bigger next door neighbor)? If so I would love to bet that this won't happen for at least another year (or until Iraq has stable governance).
I should have done a better job spell checking (hear is here).
Hear, hear! :-)
Dyslexic moment. MITW: Multiple Independantely Targetable Warheads.
Yeah. And we saw what happened to Saddam's 'elite Revolutionary Guards.' Bwaa ha ha ha ha ha!
I have no doubt that, when the situation really demands urgent military action, THIS president will act first and ask Congressional permission afterwards. Congress is not the Commander in Chief, he is.
He is not the stupid cowboy the Left and the Euroweenies like to portray him as. However, he is a man who first and foremost relies on his own judgement to delegate to experts and then to render the big decisions in a timely manner so that they can be properly executed by the military. The Iraq intelligence miscues will make the scrub and interpretation of the Iran atomic program data subject to a very rigorous review. But if the capacity and intent (= threat) is there and unambiguous and the NCA supports action, he will act.
And not by feeble Carter/Clinton half measures either.
Right you are. And he doesn't need permission from Congress, either. Sure, to declare and fund a War, yes. But my point is that wouldn't be required, with all the assets already in the neighborhood, as it were. :-)
We're safe enough in North America for quite awhile but Europe is emphatically not.
We might be fairly safe in North America, but what about all the U.S. bases, economic assets, etc... they COULD reach? :-0
True enough. Let's hope the Russians don't GIVE them one.
It was one thing for them to get their hands on 'a nuke'. So much more different for them to put their 'nuke' on a MIRV ICBM.
Not good. Wonder what they are talking about in the Knesset tonight?
What kind of bagels to order for breakfast? ;-)
