CA: New voters being rejected - Many didn't provide the identification that's now required

More than 25 percent of the new registration forms sent to the state since Jan. 1 have been returned to the counties, most because they lack the driver's license, state identification or Social Security numbers now required by federal law.

Problems with a new statewide voter registration system could keep tens of thousands of Californians from showing up on election rolls this June.

More than 25 percent of the new registration forms sent to the state since Jan. 1 have been returned to the counties, most because they lack the driver's license, state identification or Social Security numbers now required by federal law.

"It's part of the new validation requirements that are pretty stringent,'' said David Tom, election manager for San Mateo County. "Any information that doesn't match exactly gets rejected.''

--snip--

Each rejected registration means extra work for county election officials, who have to personally contact each voter, by mail or by telephone, to collect the needed information.

--snip--

Under the federal Help America Vote Act of 2002, states, not counties, are responsible for maintaining a centralized voter-registration database. Every voter in California must provide either a driver's license number, a state identification card number, the last four digits of a Social Security number or a unique number provided by the state. Each then must be verified by the Department of Motor Vehicles or the Social Security Administration. If the information doesn't match, the person can't vote.

"Voters will be surprised when they show up at their polling place and find they aren't on the rolls,'' said Tom. "There are a lot of things we don't feel comfortable with.''

.. especially if the demRats signed them up , bussed them there and then the illegals get handcuffed and hauled off when they show up to vote..

Oh the horror. Oh the humanity!

Too bad. If people can't do something as simple as register to vote with proper identification, they probably don't know the issues anyway....

I can already see the Dems in California after election day now. Cries of voter purging will be rampant because they won't be on the rolls.

What with the pillars of their voter registration being the homeless, the dead, the non-existent and the illegal alien, Democrat recruitment must be down. :-)

Too bad, is right. Most of the people in this category are not allowed to vote LEGALLY anyway. If you cannot register LEGALLY with LEGAL documents, keep away from the voting booth -- that should be the message.

True, but they feel they should still be able to go in and yank that DEM handle if they want.

I would love to know the % difference between "disenfranchised" dems vs. Repubs, bet its up around 95 - 5, allowing for stupidity.

"Under the federal Help America Vote Act of 2002"

"In November, California became the first state in the nation to comply with the new voter database requirements."

I think this means that California, three years after the law wqas passed, is the first state to comply with this law. What the h--- are the rest of the states doing?

I was not even aware that such a law had been passed, though I am loving it. This years California whine crop promises to be an eventful one.

Very Cool...and about time.

Now we need poll watchers to make sure ID is checked.

Does this require any proof of citizenship? What's required to obtain a driver's license or state ID?

I would be, as much, interested how many of these undocumented dissappearing "voters" will be prosecuted if found to have voted illegally? Inquiring minds would like to know.

We are not "allowed" to show ID at polling places in California. Don't ask me why. We just sign in the blank space next to our name.

The other screwy thing is that we are not "allowed" to use a pen to sign, pencils only.

"Voters will be surprised when they show up at their polling place and find they aren't on the rolls,'' said Tom

Will they receive sample ballots and voter guides if they're not properly registered? I would guess not. If a person previously registered doesn't receive these booklets, maybe he should re-register to ensure that he is registered.
